By Bob Aaron Property law Fri., May 10, 2019 Buried in last month’s provincial budget is a measure designed to reduce the cost of obtaining probate — “to provide tax relief for families when they need it most, as the death of a loved one is a difficult time.” Effective Jan. 1, 2020, the Estate Administration Tax will be eliminated for estates with assets of $50,000 or less. For larger taxable estates, the tax will be reduced by $250. The estate tax is collected on filing an application for a certificate of appointment of estate trustee, commonly known as probate. Since June 1992, when the Ontario government tripled its probate fees, the amount payable is $5 per $1,000 on the first $50,000 of estate assets, and $15 per $1,000 on the balance, with no maximum. Realistically, a $250 … [Read more...] about Homeowners should seek legal advice when estate planning

MADRID -- Zinedine Zidane apologised and said he wished Real Madrid's miserable season would end now after they were beaten by 19th-placed Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Madrid's response to Barcelona winning the title on Saturday night was to slip to a 1-0 defeat at Vallecas and fall 18 points behind La Liga's newly-crowned champions. Zidane took over knowing Madrid's title challenge was all-but extinguished but the difference on Barca then was 12 points while catching Atletico Madrid, now nine ahead, seemed achievable. Adri Embarba's penalty, given after consultation with VAR, was enough for Rayo, who move to within six points of survival, with three games left to play. READ: Fresh feel for Champions League semis "Today we did nothing," Zidane said. "From minute one until the end, at all levels. Sometimes you cannot score but today we did not even create chances, did not play at all. "We must be very angry. I am angry, because the image we gave off today was bad. I am responsible … [Read more...] about News Football: Zidane apologizes after Madrid lose to struggling Rayo

How can businesses — most especially the numerous micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) — be prepared for any natural or manmade disasters? How can small enterprises and professionals survive calamities and accidents? The following is not based just on textbook research or interviews, but I personally suffered a destructive accidental fire in one of my businesses and it was caused by the fire from a next-door neighbor’s business (which had mysteriously been allowed to operate by the fire department without any fire extinguishers, while my staff had to use up to 13 units of 10-kilo and 20-kilo fire extinguishers). Here are suggestions for all of us: Review and be sure to update your … [Read more...] about How can small businesses & professionals prepare for disasters?
