BRUSSELS: Momentum is growing across Europe toward a mid-century target for climate neutrality that UN scientists say the world must embrace to avert catastrophe. But experts say the 28 EU countries must accelerate measures on many fronts once they set the goal of emitting no more greenhouse gases than they absorb by 2050.They insist that "climate neutrality" is achievable, but only provided there is political will and trillions of euros in investment for a major technological revolution.Ursula von der Leyen put the mid-century target atop her programme to the European Parliament before it confirmed her on Tuesday (Jul 16) as the new European Commission president."I want Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050," von der Leyen told the assembly, eliciting strong applause.Last year, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that temperature rises must be capped at 1.5 deg Celsius over pre-industrial levels to avoid an upsurge in killer … [Read more...] about Politics and finance dog EU climate zero efforts

My favourite Stephff character is the soi dog. On Saturday, we were treated to nine of these adorable creatures with their bulging cross-eyes, skin patches and severed tails lashed on with string. Made my day! Nigel Pike Phang Nga I don’t think that it is a smart move to stop publishing your daily cartoon from Stephff. Year after year we are moving towards a society with less text and more images. If you compare magazines and books from 20 years ago to today’s publications, you clearly see that people are reading less and less. Soon we will end up with pictures, a title, and no more text. Stephff has an unrivalled ability to depict the news, a situation, and a whole society with a cartoon and very few words. This is an asset you should not discard. Jean-Jacques Braun Stephff joined the editorial staff of The Nation at roughly the same time that I moved to Thailand. His hilarious, delicately observed satirical slices of Thai public life have been an essential … [Read more...] about Don’t sack your soi dog!
A dog named Lucky was found critically injured and later died after allegedly being burned alive in Menteng, Central Jakarta. Sarana Metta Indonesia Foundation representative Christian Joshua Pale, who immediately attempted to save the mixed dalmatian before it died due to severe injuries, said a neighbor of the dog’s owner allegedly hit the dog with a glass bottle full of gasoline and then set it on fire last Friday evening. “Last Friday afternoon, Lucky was just sitting in his cage when suddenly a neighbor urinated directly next to him. Lucky instinctively responded by scratching him,” Christian said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com. He went on to say that the neighbor became furious at the dog and demanded that the owner move it elsewhere. The neighbor threatened to burn the dog if it was not moved, Christian said. However, Lucky was never moved as its owner, Melly, was at a mosque for tarawih prayers that evening, he said. “When the owner arrived … [Read more...] about Pet dog allegedly burned to death in Central Jakarta
The body of Sharles Haarlemmermeer, 84, was spotted by local villagers, who alerted the Muang police station at 8am. The water-retaining pond of the Krabi branch of the Provincial Water Authority is about one kilometre away from the house the Dutch man lived in with his Thai wife, Pikul Srisomjit. The pond holds raw water that is used to make tap water. Police said the man might have accidentally fallen into the pond while walking on its edge, or perhaps fainted and fell due to the heat. A large canvas covered the edges and bottom of the pond, and police believe Haarlemmermeer was unable to climb up because of the material’s slippery edge. Pikul said her husband left home at 4pm for a daily walk with his American Shepherd dog. She sought help from a local foundation to search for her husband after he did not return home before nightfall. About 20 rescuers and villagers searched for the elderly man for several hours in vain and called off the search late at night. The body … [Read more...] about Dog watches over Dutch man, 84, found drowned in Krabi pound
With the largest number of condominiums in Bangkok – not to mention the highest land prices –Sukhumvit Road is home to some of the city’s richest folk. The construction that has taken place over the last three decades has done away with most of the graceful villas with large gardens that once lined its sois, greatly reducing areas where pampered pets can enjoy leisure time with their owners outside four walls. Fortunately, though, Chana “Mint” Hetrakul, executive director of Tre 3 Sanctuary, has come up with a solution, opening Trail and Tail, the first comprehensive pet-friendly community mall in the country. “Our old family home was located here. But the house deteriorated, so my family and relatives started to think about turning this space into something that could benefit society as a whole. All of us are animal lovers and so we decided on the Trail and Tail Pet-Friendly Community project. Our aim is to serve the lifestyle needs of … [Read more...] about Dog day afternoons
