TOKYO: Japan's incoming emperor Crown Prince Naruhito faces the delicate task of balancing tradition within the world's oldest monarchy and his own modern values, including protecting his family from the palace's rigid rules. The 59-year-old heir has not been shy about criticising the sometimes stifling lifestyle imposed on royals, particularly as his wife Masako has struggled to adapt to imperial life. And like his popular father Akihito, he has warned of the need to remember World War II "correctly," without downplaying Japan's early 20th-century militarism.Born on Feb 23, 1960, Naruhito was the first Japanese prince to grow up under the same roof as his parents and siblings - royal children were previously raised by nannies and teachers. He studied for two years at Oxford University in the 1980s after graduating with a history degree in Japan, and reportedly adorned his residence with a poster of American actress Brooke Shields. In Britain, he was able to shed some of the … [Read more...] about Japan’s new imperial couple faces heavy burden of tradition
Emperor Akihito, who abdicates today after a 30-year reign, will leave a legacy of a Japanese monarchy that is more in step with the times. Together with Empress Michiko, he would visit victims of disasters and people in retirement homes and care centres for the handicapped. As he said on his 84th birthday: "I have considered that the first and foremost duty of the emperor is to pray for peace and happiness of all the people. At the same time, I also believe that in some cases it is … [Read more...] about Monarchy that kept up with the times

THE Jaffna Junction in Malaysia – social network of the Malaysian Sri Lankan community – is shocked and saddened by the despicable acts of barbarism in Sri Lanka on Easter Day. We would like to extend our love and condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and we wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery. We also wish more strength to the hearts and hands of the first responders and the medical personnel who are attending to the injured and to the security personnel who are trying to bring the situation under control. We struggle to comprehend the depths of depravity people can descend to, and we, the diaspora grieve in unison with the people of Sri Lanka. Though some may be overwhelmed with emotion, it is vital that we force our minds to be rational and intelligent and not buy into the spin or conjecture or the conspiracy theories. This is not a game. Let the authorities investigate. Let the authorities bring these cowardly terrorists to … [Read more...] about Be wary of spin over bombings
