By Michael Hiltzik Los Angeles Times Fri., Dec. 21, 2018 For those of you consumed with curiosity about how Elon Musk spends his spare time —and isn’t that everybody? —here’s a clue. He just rolled out an update to the software in Tesla cars allowing them to make farting noises on demand. Yes, you read that, or heard that, right. Tesla, the company, didn’t issue an announcement of the technological improvement, but Musk himself did, via his preferred medium for making important corporate announcements, Twitter. Underscoring his stature as CEO who enjoys a rude joke as much as the 8-year-old sitting a couple of desks over, Musk pointed out that one of the six noises from which drivers can choose is labelled “short shorts ripper,” which he called “a thank you to Tesla short sellers ... haha.” The new rollout fits nicely within Musk’s apparent attention deficit disorder. Tesla still faces multiple questions … [Read more...] about Elon Musk just rolled out an update to make Teslas sound like they’re passing gas

The Big Falcon Rocket, or BFR, will use a fully reusable booster and a fully reusable spaceship. In SpaceX’s “final’ design, the two-part launch system stands about 387 feet tall and 30 feet in diameter. We created a interactive size comparison tool to show how big a real-life BFR might be. Elon Musk’s rocket company, SpaceX, is working on something big – really big. The Big Falcon Rocket, or BFR, is an unprecedented launch system designed to rocket up to 100 people and 150 tons of food, water, and other supplies to the surface of Mars. The end goal: colonize the red planet and back up the human race. Musk revealed what he described as the final BFR design in … [Read more...] about Elon Musk and SpaceX are building a monster rocket for Mars. Here’s how big it is compared to 20 familiar objects.
LOS ANGELES: SpaceX, Elon Musk's space transportation company, was set on Monday (Sep 17) to name the first private passenger who will take a trip around the moon aboard its forthcoming Big Falcon Rocket spaceship, taking the race to commercialise space travel to new heights.SpaceX said it will name the first passenger to travel to the moon since the United States' Apollo missions ended in 1972 at an event Monday evening at the company's headquarters and rocket factory in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne. In moves typical of his publicity-seeking style, Musk, who is also the billionaire chief executive of electric car maker Tesla Inc, has already teased a few tantalising details about the trip and the passenger's identity, but left major questions unanswered. On Thursday, Musk tweeted a picture of a Japanese flag. He followed that up on Sunday with tweets showing new artist renderings of the Big Falcon Rocket, or BFR, the super heavy-lift launch vehicle that Musk promises will … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s SpaceX to name first passenger for moon voyage

The private lunar mission is meant to demonstrate a new two-part launch system called Big Falcon Rocket, which is designed to eventually bring humans to Mars. Engineers are said to be building a prototype of the BFR’s spaceship primarily out of carbon-fiber composites. Exactly how SpaceX is building that spaceship isn’t publicly known, but industry experts have some guesses. Aerospace engineers, astronauts, and Musk himself have said the first missions to Mars are likely to be perilous. In December, a giant white tent appeared at the Port of Los Angeles. A routine permit suggested that SpaceX, the rocket company … [Read more...] about Elon Musk is building a spaceship that’s so ambitious, some experts call it ‘science fiction.’ Here’s what SpaceX and its engineers are up against.
By Andrew Ross Sorkin The New York Times Jessica Silver-Greenberg Kate Kelly Neal E. Boudette Wed., Aug. 15, 2018 Members of Tesla’s board are scrambling to control a chief executive who some directors think is out of control. Elon Musk, the electric-car maker’s co-founder and chief executive, stirred up a public storm by announcing on Twitter last week that he wanted to turn Tesla into a private company. In recent days, according to people familiar with the matter, some of his fellow board members delivered a stern message: Stop tweeting. Musk hasn’t heeded that advice. He has continued to post messages on Twitter, publicly plotting the company’s strategy and in some cases making assertions of dubious accuracy. That has only added to the chaos engulfing the struggling company. Tesla’s board members are also racing to inoculate themselves from the possible fallout from Musk’s public statements. While it’s … [Read more...] about Tesla’s board members to Elon Musk: Stop tweeting
