Army Chief Gen Manoj Naravane on Wednesday said the disengagement in Pangong Tso (lake) was a ‘win-win’ situation for both India and China and it was still a long way towards de-escalation. China had been in the habit of making small incremental moves like in the South China Sea that were not challenged but the Ladakh Standoff had shown that this strategy would not work with India and “every move will be met resolutely”, he noted. Also read: Antony calls disengagement with China a ‘surrender of rights’ “China has been in the habit of creeping forward and making very small incremental changes, where each change by itself was not very big or worthy of a very strong reaction. Because of these small incremental moves which were never contested it has been able to achieve its aims without firing a shot or without any loss of life. What has happened in the South China Sea is a very glaring example of that,” Gen. Naravane said at a webinar organised by Vivekananda International ... » Learn More about India-China | Disengagement a win-win situation, says Army Chief

South Korea, Japan must look to future to improve ties: Moon Jae-in
South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday that his government is eager for talks with Japan to improve relations following years of bitter feuding over historical grievances, adding that those unresolved issues should not stand in the way of developing “future-oriented” ties. “There have been times where issues of the past weren’t separated from those of the future and became intermingled with each other. This has impeded forward-looking development,” Mr. Moon said in a nationally televised speech commemorating the anniversary of a 1919 Korean uprising against Japanese colonial rule. “The Korean government is always ready to sit down and have talks with the Japanese government,” he said. South Korea and Japan have been struggling to repair relations that sank to their lowest point in decades in 2019 following South Korean court rulings that ordered Japanese companies to pay reparations to Koreans who were forced to work in their factories during World War II. Amicable Sino-Indian relations benefit both: China Daily editorial
India will reportedly clear 45 investment proposals from China now tensions have eased on the western section of the border following the disengagement of front-line troops. The proposals had been held up since last year after India tightened controls on Chinese investment in the country in response to the months-long military standoff in the border area. Other retaliatory measures New Delhi took against Beijing last year included holding Chinese imports at ports for extra checks, banning more than 200 Chinese apps including TikTok and WeChat, and blocking Chinese companies from participating in India's 5G network trials. Given the huge negative impacts of the restrictive policies, along with incessant calls by many in India to decouple from China economically, there was growing pessimism over the prospects for Sino-Indian economic and trade ties. Yet despite all this, China regained its position as India's top trade partner in 2020, with two-way trade standing at $77.7 ... » Learn More about Amicable Sino-Indian relations benefit both: China Daily editorial

''Disengagement must be verified and re-verified at every stage.' IMAGE: Indian Air Force Jaguars flying over Ladakh. Photograph: ANI Photo "We cannot afford to take any chances. We have to see after the disengagement what is China's capability to alter the status quo once again. The commanders need to have this aspect in their calculation and have contingency plans to make sure we don't lose ground." Lieutenant General Subrata Saha (retd) -- former Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, former General Officer Commanding XV Corps and member of the National Security Advisory Board -- tells Rediff.com 's Archana Masih . How do you view the disengagement process and what do you think led to the breakthrough? In March 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping gave a statement on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Durban that India and China should resolve their boundary issues as soon as possible, but on the ground, China was trying to push the boundary resolution on its ... » Learn More about ‘The Chinese can’t be trusted’
