As NATO meets, Ukraine says Russia could store nuclear weapons in Crimea
BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Ukraine's defence minister accused Russia on Wednesday of preparing to potentially store nuclear weapons in Crimea and warned that Moscow could attack Ukraine to ensure water supplies for the annexed peninsula. Andrii Taran, speaking just before an emergency NATO meeting with allied defence and foreign ministers, also said he could not rule out a possibility that Russian forces in Crimea could "undertake substantive military provocations" this year. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014, in a move that triggered Western sanctions against Moscow. "Crimea's infrastructure is being prepared for potentially storing nuclear weapons," Taran told the European Parliament's sub-committee on defence. "The very presence of nuclear munitions in the peninsula may spark a whole array of complex political, legal and moral problems." Taran provided no evidence for his assertion but said Russia was massing 110,000 troops on Ukraine's border in 56 battalion-sized ... » Learn More about As NATO meets, Ukraine says Russia could store nuclear weapons in Crimea
About S$370 million in payouts erroneously credited to firms under Jobs Support Scheme in October
SINGAPORE: About S$370 million in government payouts under the Jobs Support Scheme (JSS) were erroneously credited to about 5,400 companies in October last year, after mistakes were made in computing the disbursements. The overpayments make up about 6 per cent of the total amount paid out under JSS last October, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Thursday (Apr 8). Explaining what happened, the ministries said the payouts were computed based on the dates that the companies reopened after the COVID-19 “circuit breaker”, which ended in June last year. However, there had been “errors in the compilation and processing of business reopening dates”, said the ministries in a media release. The companies that were paid extra were erroneously tagged as having reopened later, making them qualify for a higher payout. About 5,400 firms were affected, or about 3.6 per cent of all companies that received ... » Learn More about About S$370 million in payouts erroneously credited to firms under Jobs Support Scheme in October
Why Lena Dunham is championing high fashion for plus-size women
In the 10 or so years since she first became famous, Lena Dunham has been many things. She has been a wunderkind, a writer-director-actor-producer of both feature films and television series, voice of her generation, David Remnick mentee, Golden Globe winner and representative of liberal white privilege. She has been a Vogue cover girl, newsletter maven and subject of social media shaming. Also head of her own book imprint at Random House, endometriosis and hysterectomy survivor, and oversharer. She has been so many things, in fact (seriously, has it been only 10 years?), that it is kind of extraordinary to realise that one thing she hasn’t been is that increasingly beloved side hustle of almost anyone in the public eye: A fashion designer. Of course, that may be because another thing she has been is an often unfairly mocked presence on the red carpet, subject of cavalier memes and style police cruelty. “I am not,” she said recently, “a celebrity who’s ever been asked to ... » Learn More about Why Lena Dunham is championing high fashion for plus-size women

But owner Herbert Chow is now struggling to get his designs made in China, where his avian characters have been seized by authorities for "advocating violence". Chow, 57, was preparing for the Lunar New Year shopping season earlier this year when he was informed that a shipment of some 10,000 Chickeeduck items had been seized in mainland China. "My manufacturer said the customs department found the products were advocating violence in social movements," Chow told AFP after recently deciding to go public. At first glance, the contraband cartoons might seem innocuous. They included cushions with yellow birds holding umbrellas alongside ... » Learn More about Violent ducks? Globe calls on customers to participate in E-waste recycling
AS a company at the core of innovation, responsible use of technology is a principle Globe wants to foster in its customers. Even as gadgets come and go, they should not go to waste. E-waste, or electronic waste, will further cause harm to the environment if disposed improperly as it is made up of different materials that are toxic and hazardous. This is why Globe established E-Waste Zero, an environmental program focused on responsible disposal and recycling of electronic wastes. E-Waste Zero provides a way for people to donate their old, non-working electronic devices via participating Globe Stores, select malls, schools, and offices of partner organizations nationwide which will then be turned over to DENR-accredited Treatment, Storage, and Disposal (TSD) facilities for proper handling and recycling.
