Party’s fulfillment of its promise is historic contribution to world’s anti-poverty cause: China Daily editorial
Over the past eight years, more than 1,800 Party members working at grassroot levels across the country have lost their lives while striving for the poverty elimination cause. Their sacrifice and spirit are vivid demonstrations of the Communist Party of China's commitment to the goal of eradicating abject poverty in the country. That's why President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, paid high tribute to them and those working on the front line of the war without smoke, when addressing a grand gathering in Beijing on Thursday in which he declared a "complete victory" had been won. The announcement marked the fulfillment of a solemn promise made to the people and the country by the CPC, and the accomplishment of a "miracle" that will go down in history. The achievement comes after eight years in which nearly 100 million rural residents of 128,000 villages in 832 counties were lifted above the national poverty line thanks to a series of ... » Learn More about Party’s fulfillment of its promise is historic contribution to world’s anti-poverty cause: China Daily editorial

GM looking to build 2nd US battery factory, Tennessee likely
LG Chem of Korea. The companies hope to have a decision on a site in the first half of the year, spokesman Dan Flores said Thursday. Flores would not say where the company is looking, but it's likely to be near GM 's Spring Hill, Tennessee, factory complex, which is one of three sites the company has designated to build electric vehicles . A joint venture between GM and LG Chem currently is building a $2 billion battery factory in Lordstown, Ohio, near Cleveland, that will employ about 1,000 people. The site is fairly close to GM's two other designated electric vehicle plants, one in Detroit and the other north of the city in Orion Township, Michigan. GM is likely to need far more battery capacity if it's able to deliver on a goal of converting all of its new passenger vehicles from internal combustion engines to electricity by 2035. The burden of being a son, a father and a prince
Next By all estimates, young George Alexander Louis will lead a less formal life than his father. Child of a broken marriage, Prince William has been showing all signs of becoming a far different father than Charles has been and way different than Philip was, more hands-on and a man of action rather than one who has a retinue of nannies and governesses. But playing dad AND prince is no easy job. Here's looking at the three generations of fathers and sons of the British royal family and how they've handled it all: S leeves rolled up, car seat in hand and no aides to assist him, Prince William cut an unlikely figure of a royal father as he carried young prince George into a black Range Rover parked outside London's St Mary's Hospital and drove his family to Kensington Palace before heading to Bucklebury, the home of his in-laws, the Middletons. If these few glimpses of the young royal family are anything to go by, William will be a more hands on ... » Learn More about The burden of being a son, a father and a prince
Get real about artificial intelligence
In recent years, artificial intelligence has been attracting increasing attention, money and talent. But much of the hype is the result of myths and misconceptions being peddled by people outside of the field. For many years, the field was growing incrementally, with existing approaches performing around 1-2 percent better each year on standard benchmarks. But there was a real breakthrough in 2012, when computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton and his colleagues at the University of Toronto showed that their "deep learning" algorithms could beat state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms by a margin of 10.8 percentage points on the ImageNet Challenge (a benchmark dataset). At the same time, AI researchers were benefiting from ever-more powerful tools, including cost-effective cloud computing, fast and cheap number-crunching hardware (GPUs), seamless data sharing through the internet, and advances in high-quality open-source software. Owing to these factors, machine learning, and ... » Learn More about Get real about artificial intelligence
