Livestreaming and e-commerce have not only changed the fortunes of Liang Qianjuan, a farmer from Gansu province, but also others in her home village. Liang, a deputy to the National People's Congress, runs Longshan Zhuangyuan, an online store operating from a small, remote village in the city of Longnan. The store sells local agricultural products, such as dried long beans, honey, olive oil, almonds and eggs, to customers across the country. The 35-year-old returned to her hometown in 2013 after being a migrant worker in Guangdong province for more than a decade. After receiving training on running an e-commerce store offered by the local government, she opened the first online store in her village that year. Although the store's profits were only several thousand yuan in the first year, they increased quickly in subsequent years, she said. Last year, Liang started to sell local products on popular Chinese short video platform Kuaishou to help expand her business. She has ... » Learn More about NPC deputy an e-commerce success story

Get real about artificial intelligence
In recent years, artificial intelligence has been attracting increasing attention, money and talent. But much of the hype is the result of myths and misconceptions being peddled by people outside of the field. For many years, the field was growing incrementally, with existing approaches performing around 1-2 percent better each year on standard benchmarks. But there was a real breakthrough in 2012, when computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton and his colleagues at the University of Toronto showed that their "deep learning" algorithms could beat state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms by a margin of 10.8 percentage points on the ImageNet Challenge (a benchmark dataset). At the same time, AI researchers were benefiting from ever-more powerful tools, including cost-effective cloud computing, fast and cheap number-crunching hardware (GPUs), seamless data sharing through the internet, and advances in high-quality open-source software. Owing to these factors, machine learning, and ... » Learn More about Get real about artificial intelligence

Based on the important consensus reached in the ninth round of Corps Commander-level talks between China and India, the front line troops of two countries started disengagement in a synchronized and organized way from both sides of the Pangong lake area on Feb 10. By Feb 19, India and China had already completed the pullback in Pangong lake area and the disengagement in other disputed areas will be further discussed in the following high-level military talks. The Sino-India economic and trade relations are warming up as military tensions between the two nations ease at the disputed border. According to the latest report from Reuters, Indian government is set to approve some greenfield investment proposals and it will also look to clear some brownfield projects which are considered non-sensitive in terms of national security after the first round of clearance to new investments. Solution to gender imbalance is gender equality
Editor's note: Shanxi-based expert Wu Xiuming has sparked a heated public debate by proposing that the large number of single men in rural areas be encouraged to "pair with" single women in urban areas. The gender imbalance in urban and rural areas has become a social and demographic problem. Two experts share their views with China Daily's Yao Yuxin on how to address this problem. Excerpts follow: Marriage is a matter of choice for many women That China has a serious gender imbalance is evident from the latest official data released in early 2020, which show that in 2019, there were more than 715 million men compared with 684 million women in the country. But to suggest that the gender imbalance problem can be addressed by "pairing" the single men in rural areas with single women in urban areas is unrealistic, because there is little similarity in the two groups' attitude toward life and thought process. Most of the single men in the countryside lack the quality and ... » Learn More about Solution to gender imbalance is gender equality
China has potential to realize 2035 goal
The two sessions starting Thursday will discuss the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035, which has drawn widespread attention at home and abroad since it was proposed by the top authorities in late October. According to the proposal, China is likely to become a medium-level developed country in terms of per capita GDP by 2035. As President Xi Jinping said in a statement on the proposal: "It is entirely possible for China to meet the current high-income countries' standards by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) and to double the economic aggregate or per capita income by 2035." Nation on road to achieving target Economists have little doubt that China will become a high-income country, based on current standards, by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan. According to World Bank criteria, a country with per capita gross national income of $12,535 is defined as a high-income ... » Learn More about China has potential to realize 2035 goal
Promoting the value of eco-products with ‘green GDP’
The concept “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” was written into the report that President Xi Jinping delivered in 2017 at the 19th CPC National Congress, making it an important part of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. This has clarified the relationship between development and environmental protection—where protecting the ecological environment is protecting productivity and improving the ecological environment is developing productivity. According to the communique of the fifth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, China should continue to uphold the concept of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” optimize the layouts of the territorial space, improve supporting policies on ecological functional zones, attach great importance to protecting the ecological environment and providing more quality eco-products, establish a value realization mechanism for eco-products, improve market-based and ... » Learn More about Promoting the value of eco-products with ‘green GDP’
Top Chinese, US epidemiologists’ talk encouraging sign in global fight against pandemic
At the critical moment when the world is joining forces to stop the spread of COVID-19, top epidemiologists of China and the United States exchanged views on Tuesday -- an encouraging sign for bilateral cooperation as well as the global battle against the still raging pandemic. In an online talk organized by the University of Edinburgh, leading Chinese respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan and top US infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci have called for more efforts to enhance global solidarity and cooperation to beat the deadly virus. Their remarks are a reflection of the growing global public consensus that the human race should join hands and work together to beat the pandemic, and that this is the only way out of the calamity. As the two medical heavyweights have noted, if the virus is stamped out in one country but allowed to spread uninhibited in other parts of the world, it will mutate at a fast pace through cross-border transmissions and rekindle the outbreak ... » Learn More about Top Chinese, US epidemiologists’ talk encouraging sign in global fight against pandemic
