A research conducted on mice discovered that having too much molecular switch called VGLL3, which regulates immune response genes in skin cells, lead to autoimmune diseases. The study published in ‘JCI Insight’ pointed a key role for VGLL3. Three years ago, a team of University of Michigan researchers showed that women have more VGLL3 in their skin cells than men.“VGLL3 appears to regulate immune response genes that have been implicated as important to autoimmune diseases that are more common in women, but that doesn’t appear to be regulated by sex hormones,” said Johann Gudjonsson, the lead author.“Now, we have shown that over-expression of VGLL3 in the skin of transgenic mice is by itself sufficient to drive a phenotype that has striking similarities to systemic lupus erythematosus, including skin rash, and kidney injury,” added Gudjonsson. Now, working in mice, researchers have discovered that having too much … [Read more...] about Study finds why women get autoimmune diseases far more often than men

Companies need to collaborate to move needle on gender diversity: Zinnov-Intel India study
There is a 30% representation of women in corporate India, with 31% and 26% representation within non-technical and technical roles, respectively, finds the ‘Zinnov-Intel India Gender Diversity Benchmark’ report by global management consulting firm Zinnov in collaboration with Intel India. This study is part of an industry initiative Be-WISE (Women Innovators, Social Leaders and Entrepreneurs), that aims to accelerate inclusive participation of women in the workplace. The study evaluated 60 companies from the Indian ecosystem, comprising global capability centres (GCCs), technology service providers, startups, and Indian companies, to gain an understanding of the current diversity landscape, with the intent of baselining key practices to improve diversity. The study finds that there are only 11% senior women leaders in the ecosystem; however, the junior and middle levels fare slightly better at 38% and 20%, respectively. Further, the number of women on company boards has … [Read more...] about Companies need to collaborate to move needle on gender diversity: Zinnov-Intel India study
India likely to gain $11bn in exports from US-China trade war: UNCTAD
United Nations: There may be a golden lining for India in the dark clouds of the tariff war waged by US President Donald Trump against China, and it is likely to increase its exports by as much as $11 billion if the proposed tariffs go into effect next month, according to the UN's trade arm. Statistics for India obtained by IANS from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) show that the nation will benefit the most as a result of the tariffs proposed by the US on Chinese imports, increasing exports by $8.3 billion. It will gain $2.65 billion from China's tariffs on US imports. Explaining the effect of the tariff war on other countries, Pamela Coke-Hamilton, the head of UNCTAD's international trade division said recently: "The US-China bilateral trade will decline and be replaced by trade originating in other countries." "Our analysis shows that while bilateral tariffs are not very effective in protecting domestic firms, they are valid instruments to limit trade … [Read more...] about India likely to gain $11bn in exports from US-China trade war: UNCTAD

How Trinidad and Tobago played a key role in India’s ongoing LGBT hearing
In the end, it happened amazingly fast. After the 18 years it has taken so far to fight the Section 377 case, for decriminalisation of consensual same-sex relations, the lawyers and activists involved had thought that the hearings before the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court would take a few weeks. It was almost entirely done in three days, with a final 90-minute session allocated for Tuesday. It was startling. Senior counsel seemed spring-loaded, popping up and down, making arguments at break-neck speed, compressing speeches, discarding points and leaving more extensive examples to written submissions. And this wasn’t because of lack of interest from the judges. Repeatedly during the hearings, the five judges chimed in with remarks that showed how engaged they were with the issue. The contrast couldn’t have been greater with the last round of extensive hearings on the issue in the Supreme Court, which resulted in the verdict of Koushal versus Naz in 2013 that … [Read more...] about How Trinidad and Tobago played a key role in India’s ongoing LGBT hearing
