In a move that could potentially thaw the frigid state of India’s now-turned dormant telecom sector, the committee of secretaries (CoS) is mulling over setting a minimum price for mobile calls and data, a CNBC-TV18 report said. Sources aware of the development have confirmed to CNBC-TV18 that the committee has sought recommendations from Department of Telecom (DoT) on setting a minimum charge for all tariffs for telecom players, while also assessing the impact it will have on telecom operators. This move will be beneficial for incumbents like Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel who reported a combined loss of RS 74,000 crore for its second quarter ended September 30, 2019 results after the Supreme Court asked telecom companies to pay Rs 92,000 crore to the government as Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR). To put a check on fly-by-night operators and generation of fake invoices under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, the Centre is mulling limiting the number of invoices generated by new registrants. The cap on the number of invoices will be in line with the annual turnover of the businesses, which could then be raised on basis of credit history, a senior Finance Ministry official said. The restrictions on the number of invoices are likely to come into effect once the new GST returns system is rolled out from April 1 next year. “We are detecting tax evasion through data analytics and artificial intelligence instead of randomly going on the street and trying to scare traders and businessmen. NEW DELHI: Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country must understand the needs of the foreign market and design their products accordingly to be able to increase the sector’s share in India's exports to around 60%, union minister of MSMEs Nitin Gadkari said. Currently, MSME’s contribute around 49% to the country’s exports. "We have a target that at least 60% of our export from MSME," Gadkari said at the inauguration of the 39th Indian International Trade Fair here on Thursday. Gadkari said that entrepreneurs must identify resources in each state of the country and exploit their potential in accordance with the preference of foreign markets. “We need interaction with different countries to understand what they want, on the basis of that we need to accelerate our manufacturing activity,” Gadkari said.
