Girisha B V had ensured that his family was taking adequate precautions to stay safe from COVID but a visit to hometown changed everything. He and his wife both tested positive and he had to be hospitalised due to his symptoms. Here's his COVID experience We were cautious about COVID while we were in Bengaluru from the last 6 months, strictly following all precautions to save ourselves. Recently, my whole family visited my home town in Karnataka. There nobody was wearing a mask and did not care much about COVID. My family including kids didn't follow any protocols and happily spent 3 days after a long time. We were back to Bengaluru on Sunday, 4th October 2020. I got fever and body pain on Monday, 5th October (Sunday). I started self quarantine from Monday evening and started taking Dolo 650 for fever. On 6th October, I consulted a doctor online in Practo; they suggested medication and asked me to go for COVID test after 2 - 3 days. Satellites capture formation of enormous iceberg A74 on Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf
Email Digital Story Innovation Team By Mark Doman Updated March 05, 2021 09:30:45 Map: Antarctica Since the early 70s, satellites have surveyed the ebb and flow of vast ice masses at the edge of Antarctica. The data being collected from space has allowed scientists to monitor huge areas of the icy continent, even through the darkness and hostility of an Antarctic winter. One of the more spectacular sights captured by the satellites is the calving of city-sized icebergs from ice shelves — the giant glaciers transporting ice from the middle of the continent out to sea. Just last week, a huge 1,200-square-kilometre iceberg broke away from the Brunt Ice Shelf near the Weddell Sea. It's the first large iceberg to break off from this shelf in 50 years. "A lot of these big ice shelves, we'll normally get, like, one iceberg produced from the shelf during our careers," said Dr Sue Cook, a glaciologist with the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership. "So ... » Learn More about Satellites capture formation of enormous iceberg A74 on Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf
‘Time to accept that Dhaka attackers had an IS link’
'The police had cautioned me that there could be some 'trouble' in Dhaka by the end of June.' "I t's time Sheikh Hasina accepts that the militants who attacked the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka had connections with Islamic State," Anizzujaman , Professor Emeritus of Bengali at Dhaka University, tells Rediff.com 's Indrani Roy over the telephone from Dhaka. A resident of Gulshan, the area where the attack took place, Professor Anizzujaman, who has actively supported the cause of atheist bloggers in Bangladesh, received a death threat on his mobile in November after which the government provided him with a bodyguard. Professor Anizzujaman, below, left , believes the Bangladesh government should not waste time debating if the terrorists had connections with IS and instead track down the terror trail without delay. Gulshan is a high security area. Do you think an attack of this magnitude means there was a serious lapse on the administration's part? ‘The Girl on the Train’ movie review: A supposed suspense-thriller with a lacklustre attitude
There is something really off about The Girl on the Train , based on British author Paula Hawkins’ novel of the same name and its subsequent film adaptation starring Emily Blunt, right from the start — if you discount the miscast lead actors that is. Look at the way the opening sequence begins inside the forest with a character chasing another. Look at the way the editor cuts back to show the wound on Parineeti Chopra’s forehead — this, after the opening scene clearly establishes a physical clash between them. Look at the way the film panders to the NRI audience with the only Indian sensibility being the quintessential wedding song + heartbreak song + my life-is-miserable song + new day, new world song. Look at the way Mira Kapoor’s (Parineeti Chopra) story is rushed through with the least bit of character development. She is a lawyer. She meets Shekhar (Avinash Tiwary) at a wedding, of course. They fall in love over a wedding song, of course. She takes up a high profile case. ... » Learn More about ‘The Girl on the Train’ movie review: A supposed suspense-thriller with a lacklustre attitude
When Amitabh Bachchan almost got named Inquilab by his mother
Mumbai: Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan , who celebrated his 78th birthday on Sunday, recently revealed that his mother Teji Bachchan had almost named him Inquilab when he was born. During one of the episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati 12 , Big B shared a rather interesting anecdote from his life. He said that in 1942, his mother had participated in a rally which demanded independence for India from the British rule. At that time, she was eight months pregnant and was expecting Amitabh. However, when the men of her family found out that she was not at home and had gone out to participate in the procession, they reprimanded her and got her back home. At that time, a person who was also a part of the Independence struggle suggested that she should name her child Inquilab, which means revolution. Untitled Carousel Amitabh Bachchan is booked for a year While most actors half his age are still wondering about when to get back into action, Amitabh Bachchan brought in his ... » Learn More about When Amitabh Bachchan almost got named Inquilab by his mother
‘Ninnila Ninnila’ review: For the love of food
There are two approaches to cooking — one that follows recipes to the minute detail by measuring at every step, and one where ingredients are combined with an intuition and practised sense of smell and taste rather than by the measuring spoon. Whatever be the method, good food nourishes the soul. Ani I V Sasi’s Ninnila Ninnila (simultaneously dubbed in Tamil as Theeni ) shows a bit of both methods and roots for the second one. Food, here, reminds the central characters of people they have loved and lost. Food also helps to revive or forge new connections, heal, and find a new purpose in their lives. Ninnila Ninnila Cast: Ashok Selvan, Ritu Varma, Nithya Menen Direction: Ani Sasi Streaming on: ZeePlex Ani Sasi juxtaposes two unlike people who will soon cross paths. We are in denial, but Bangladeshis are still flooding India’s northeast
The local labour force is streaming out of the region looking for jobs in peninsular India, creating a vacuum that makes it easier for the Bangladeshis to fill in, says R N Ravi. C ontrary to the state government’s lore -- that the unregulated influx of Bangladeshis in Assam is a thing of the past -- a recent field research by the writer shows that it is a live and kicking phenomenon. More and more Bangladeshis are filling the expanding labour and low-end services sectors in Assam and its neighbouring states in the northeast. Mutation of once visceral existential fears over the unregulated migration of Bangladeshi nationals into an inexorable fatalism has been one of the striking characteristics of contemporary socio-political landscape of Assam. The issue that has seismic implications for national security, the future of Assam and its neighbours and which had once erupted into the historic Assam agitation (between 1979 and 1985) seems to be mourning at the margin today. ... » Learn More about We are in denial, but Bangladeshis are still flooding India’s northeast
Wallowing in stardom or a minefield?
A growing number of youngsters aspire to be social media influencers for fame and fortune. But experts warn about a narcissitic trend that can be devastating for youths. Wang Yuke reports from Hong Kong. If Hong Kong's big-time fortune tellers can strike gold by amassing a huge following over time, there's a group of young go-getters trying to take a leaf out of their book — social media influencers. But the luck and instinct that may guarantee one's success in any field of endeavor simply don't fall from the sky. It could be a make-it-or-break-it move. Kenson, 10, is nothing short of a toy influencer in Hong Kong despite his tender age. "I often come across strangers recognizing me on the street. They would leap at me, excitedly shout out my name and ask for selfies," says Kenson shyly. "I was happy about it but it, somehow, set me on edge." While many young YouTubers wallow in stardom and the glee of being lionized, being a household name is not on Kenson's priority list. ... » Learn More about Wallowing in stardom or a minefield?
