Mumbai: Overnight heavy rains in Mumbai and its adjoining areas crippled normal life and disrupted rail and air traffic on Sunday morning. Amidst the heavy downpour which continued to pound the city and its neighbouring areas, a 16-year-old boy was washed away in flood in the adjoining Palghar district, an official said. Mumbai woke up to heavy downpour for the second day in a row, with no immediate respite likely as the weather office here predicted more showers throughout the day. According to the city civic body, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intermittent rain with heavy to very heavy showers in the city and suburbs and extremely heavy rain at isolated places in next 24 hours. Four arrested in honeytrap case in Vijayapura
In an alleged case of honeytrapping, the district police have arrested four persons, including a woman, for allegedly trying to extort money from a local jewellery shop owner.The arrested persons are Danamma Hiremath, Sudhir Ghattennavar, Ravi Karjol and Mallikarjun Muragandi. At a press conference on Saturday, Superintendent of Police Prakash Nikam explained the modus operandi of the accused. He said that a few days ago, Danamma visited the jewellery shop to get a ring prepared of the gold she carried. She handed over a small quantity of gold and gave her contact number to the owner. After going through the gold, the owner found that the woman had not given real gold but some material resembling the metal. Gurugram The selection of the next mayor and deputy mayors of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) could be decided through a draw of lots, as per the proposal of 16 ward councillors, who held a meeting in Sector 15 on Saturday. However, the mayor said that she retains the support of the majority of the councillors and dismissed the possibility of a no-confidence motion.The development comes five days after 13 councillors boycotted the MCG House meeting on Tuesday to protest against the mayors’ decision to exclude seven of their agenda points from the final list. The news about a reputed stockbroking firm misusing power of attorneys (POA) given by clients in its favour to pledge the shares for its own benefit and the consequential losses suffered by the client due to the inability of the broker to return the shares has made the capital market jittery. The shock wave is not limited to such clients alone, but also to the lending community. Way back in 2010, Sebi had realised that diverse practices were prevalent in the area of obtaining power of attorneys from clients, which gave brokers and/or brokers-cum-depositary participants unfettered powers. During a study of such market practices, Sebi had observed that clients were compelled to issue irrevocable PoAs, which gave broker/s the right to open and close accounts and trade on client’s accounts without consent.
