Our test car’s as-tested price is $57,500. The Model 3 is packed with really interesting features such as a minimalist interior, advanced infotainment, and Tesla Autopilot. There have been few cars more sought after in recent memory than the Tesla Model 3. It’s Tesla’s first foray into the mass market after dominating the luxury electric vehicle segment for much of the past decade. Recently, Business Insider had the chance to spend a few hours with a brand new Model 3 on the road in and around New York City. … [Read more...] about We drove a $58,000 Tesla Model 3 and were blown away by its minimalistic design and high-tech features. caption The Tesla Model 3. source Hollis Johnson/Business Insider The Tesla Model 3 and the Chevy Bolt are your two main choices if you’re in the market for an all-electric vehicle with 200-plus-mile range. The Model 3 has a base price of $35,000, and the Bolt has the base price of $37,500, and a $7,500 federal tex credit is available for both. We found that head-to-head, two very different cars wound up in a surprising dead heat. Last year, we were so impressed by the Chevy Bolt that we named it a 2017 Car of the Year runner up. Early this year, we spent some time getting to know the hotly anticipated Tesla Model 3. We haven’t properly reviewed the Tesla Model 3 yet, but we will later in 2018. In the meantime, we thought it might be worth it see how the two vehicles stack up against each other. Read on to find out what we thought. Let’s start with the Chevy Bolt, in … [Read more...] about We drove a $57,500 Tesla Model 3 and a $43,000 Chevy Bolt to see which is better — here’s the verdict
source Hollis Johnson/Business Insider “Build quality” is a term often used in the auto industry when assessing manufacturing capability. Some observers have criticized the build quality of Tesla vehicles, most recently with the Model 3. Tesla has at times struggled with manufacturing as the same level of the rest of the industry, but it usually improves its processes. Since the Tesla Model 3 launched in July and started its uneasy path as a mass-market vehicle, Tesla watchers have been carefully scrutinizing the vehicle’s quality. Last April, Reuters reported that Tesla skipped the “soft tooling” phase, which is a pre-production process that helps automakers work out manufacturing problems before starting mass production. The company took a big risk by skipping this stage before commencing deliveries, and it has paid off. Holdups have kept Model 3 production well below … [Read more...] about The first Tesla Model 3 reviews are coming in — and there’s one thing everyone is talking about
caption Bravo! source Hollis Johnson The Chevy Bolt beat the Tesla Model 3 to market by over a year. The vehicle has been selling well for General Motors and also serves as a platform for the carmaker’s Cruise self-driving technology. We were very impressed when we drove it last year. You can easily argue that the Chevy Bolt is the most important car General Motors has ever rolled out. What we have here is a $37,495 all-electric vehicle with a range of nearly 240 miles on a single battery charge. GM took it from intro to the assembly line in less than two years, in the process beating the avidly anticipated Tesla Model 3 to market by at least a year. So what makes the Bolt more important than, say, the Cadillac XT5 crossover SUV or a new Corvette? The Bolt is a completely different kind of “halo” car. Like the Toyota Prius gas-electric hybrid 15 years ago – based initially on … [Read more...] about The all-electric Chevy Bolt is a serious threat to Tesla’s Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 has the most minimalist interior we’ve ever seen in a production car. Not every decision was brilliant, but most were, and the ultimate impression is extremely satisfying. The Model 3’s interior design is a powerful symbol of both the company’s philosophy and what it believes cars should be like in the future. Tesla has reset expectations with the interior of the Model 3, the company’s mass-market vehicle. We’d already spent some time with the car at a launch event for the $35,000 all-electric machine at Tesla’s California factory in July. At the time, I wrote that it was the most minimalist auto interior I’d ever seen. I experienced the Model 3 for only about 15 minutes back then. But this time Tesla let us borrow a bright red Model 3 for several hours. My colleague Ben Zhang and I drove it around Manhattan and New Jersey, and we took in the Zen-like interior … [Read more...] about The Tesla Model 3 interior is unlike anything we have ever seen before
