The Biden administration has indicated that it is still undecided on ending the Trump-era ban on issuing new H-1B visas, with the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asserting that the US government's top priority is the acute needs of individuals fleeing persecution. Illustration: Uttam Ghosh/ Rediff.com The H-1B visa, the most sought after among Indian IT professionals, is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. In January, then-President Donald Trump had extended the ban on issuing new H-1B visas till March 31, arguing that the country is having a very high unemployment rate and the US cannot afford to have more foreign workers. ICBC, WeChat among world’s top-10 brands
Apple leapfrogs Amazon to reclaim most-valuable status, Google in third Apple has overtaken Amazon and Google to reclaim the title of world's most-valuable brand, an accolade it has not held since 2016, according to the latest report from the London-based brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance. The report, which put China's WeChat in the top 10 for the first time, revealed that United States and Chinese brands together account for two-thirds of the world's brand value. It found 21 of the top 25 most-valuable brands were from either the USA(10) or China (11). Nine of the top 10 fastest-growing brands were from the same two nations, with four from the US and five from China. Apple, with a brand value of $263.4 billion, topped the rankings, thanks to its diversification strategy, the report said. Under Tim Cook's leadership, especially during the past five years, the company has focused on developing its growth strategies above and beyond the iPhone - which in 2020 accounted ... » Learn More about ICBC, WeChat among world’s top-10 brands
Billionaire numbers reach record high
The number of billionaires in the world increased by 412, taking the total to a record high of 3,228, according the latest Hurun Global Rich List. China added 259 new billionaires, becoming the first country in the world to top 1,000 "known" dollar billionaires with 1,058, more than the combined total of the next three countries of the United States, India and Germany. "Despite the disruption caused by COVID-19, this year has seen the biggest wealth increase of the last decade," Hurun Report chairman and chief researcher Rupert Hoogewerf said. A stock markets boom, and flurry of new listings have minted eight new dollar billionaires a week for the past year. The wealth of Tesla founder Elon Musk added a record $151 billion to $197 billion, with Musk becoming the richest man in the world for the first time. Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos, last year's richest man, ranked second with $189 billion, followed by "Luxury King" LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault ($114 billion) and Bill Gates ($110 ... » Learn More about Billionaire numbers reach record high
We don’t rely on stealing, China plays victim card on hacking and cyber attacks
New Delhi : Amid the recent reports of the Chinese hackers targetting the Indian COVID-19 vaccine makers and being behind the Mumbai power outage in 2020, China on Tuesday (March 2) said that it doesn't 'rely on stealing'. "The relevant allegations are pure rumors and slanders. Cyber attacks are highly complicated and sensitive, and their origin is difficult to trace," said the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in India on reports of Chinese hackers launching cyber attacks on the Indian facilities. He added that speculation and fabrication have no role to play on the issue of cyber attacks and said that China is firmly opposed to such irresponsible and ill-intentioned practice. "For some time, there have been certain speculation about China’s so-called theft of other countries' vaccines through hacker attacks. China takes the lead in vaccine research and development, we don't need to and will not rely on stealing to obtain vaccines," he said. He also said that ... » Learn More about We don’t rely on stealing, China plays victim card on hacking and cyber attacks
Section 144 imposed in Lucknow till April 5 amid fears of violence due to farmers’ protest
LUCKNOW: The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the state capital “with immediate effect” till April 5 in order to maintain the law and order situation. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy sentenced to three years jail on corruption charges
New Delhi: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in jail for corruption and influence-peddling on Monday (March 1). A French court found him guilty of trying to bribe a Magistrate by offering him a prestigious job in return for information about a criminal case against him. Sarkozy, however, will not go to prison as the court suspended two years of the sentence and allowed him to serve a year at home with an electronic tag. The 66-year-old is the first former French president to receive a custodial sentence, reported BBC. Along with Sarkozy, his former lawyer and the Magistrate involved in the bribery also received similar sentences. The three re expected to appeal against the order. The judge observed that Sarkozy knew what he was doing was wrong and that his actions and those of his lawyer had given the public "a very bad image of justice". The crimes were specified as influence-peddling and violation of professional ... » Learn More about Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy sentenced to three years jail on corruption charges
Myanmar’s Suu Kyi appears at court hearing via video conferencing, faces new charge
New Delhi: Myanmar`s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in good health at a court hearing via video conferencing on Monday, during which an additional charge was added to those filed against her after a coup a month ago, a lawyer for her said. Lawyer Min Min Soe told Reuters Suu Kyi had requested to see her legal team during the hearing via video link. The additional charge is from the country’s colonial-era penal code, which prohibits publishing information that may "cause fear or alarm". According to Reuters reports, Suu Kyi looked healthy as she took part in a court hearing via video conferencing in the capital, Naypyitaw. The leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) has not been seen in public since her government was ousted in a February 1 military coup and she was detained along with other party leaders. Min Min Soe said the next hearing would be March 15. Initially, she was charged with illegally importing six walkie-talkie radios.
