BSNL, MTNL turn Ebidta positive, data rates fall to Rs 10.55 per unit: Government

India has the second-largest number of telephone connections in the world, and according to the government, the tele-density has reached 86.37%, while the rural tele-density is at 58.85%. HFCL to up Hyderabad unit cable production by a third

HFCL Limited, one of the India's largest optic fibre manufacturers, is planning to increase Fibre-to-the-Home or FTTH cable production by 33% at its Hyderabad facility following the robust domestic and overseas demand, and a Rs 7,500-crore orderbook."We are going to increase capacity of FTTH cables in Hyderabad in near future by 33% from the present capacity, and aiming to complete this in next 3 months," Mahendra Nahata, managing director of HFCL said, adding that the Delhi-based company is currently supplying cable to 'large operators' deploying last-mile fibre network for home and enterprise users.India's top two incumbents - Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, in a bid to outsmart each other, are aggressively focussing on creating a dense Fibre-to-the-Home networks in large cities for triple-play services that has also gained much traction on the back of work-from-home due to Covid-19-induced lockdown.While telecom carriers soon-to-be shift to next-generation networks, the predominant … [Read more...] about HFCL to up Hyderabad unit cable production by a third

BSNL 4G: Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE spar with homegrown companies

Monday, the telco held a pre-bid conference to clear apprehensions of prospective bidders.The telecom carrier, in its notice said that the potential company must own or have unrestricted , irrevocable access and license to modify the source code and provide software support for all future versions, and added that the the source code for core as well as radio-access network should be deposited in Escrow account."They (foreign vendors) were also against any mandate of submitting source code in Escrow. ‘Optic fibre makes a major part of telecom carriers digital infrastructure spend’

Both Agarwal and Nahata agree that India's 5G upcoming commercial launch, and current FTTH strategies of telecom companies such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and pan-India BharatNet initiative would accelerate OFC demand further.Currently, the country's fibre deployment rate is at 4 lakh kilometres annually, and less than a third of a total of 6.25 lakh telecom towers are fiberised today making India to trail behind many countries worldwide. In South Korea, nearly 70% of the sites have been fiberised while in the US, Japan, and China combined, close to 75% towers have been fiberised.Between 2020-2023, India is likely to invest nearly Rs 450 billion in telecom tower fiberisation, the London-based research firm EY said.Considering the nationwide optic-fibre deployment key to data networks, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already set up a target to deploy 5 million fibre kilometres by 2024.
