Video Player Close GENEVA, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has been decreasing for the sixth week in a row, but the more contagious variants of the virus are spreading fast, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its weekly pandemic report published on Wednesday. The number of new coronavirus cases has dropped by 11 percent since last week, and North America, South America, Europe, Africa and the Western Pacific region all reported decreases. The Americas have seen the largest weekly decline with 19 percent, while the U.S. still has the highest number of weekly cases at 480,467. The number of deaths is also trending downward, the WHO said, dropping by 20 percent worldwide since last week. According to the WHO report, since the beginning of the pandemic 110 million infections and 2.5 million deaths have been recorded globally. Security has been tightened in the town and surrounding areas ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Puducherry on Thursday. Mr. Modi is scheduled to arrive at the Lawspet helipad by around 11. 30 a.m and would head to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) by road. After laying the foundation for a few development work projects and inaugurating schemes at JIPMER, the Prime Minister would return to Lawspet and address a public meeting. He would leave by around 1.30 p.m. Security has been strengthened at the venues, on the stretch from Lawspet to Gorimedu and other places in the town. Around 1,500 police personnel, including personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Rapid Action Force would be deployed for security. H2 Green Steel is planning to build a fossil fuel-free steel plant in the north of Sweden, including a sustainable hydrogen facility, with production starting in 2024, it said on Tuesday. The Lulea-based venture, which is in the process of closing 50 million euros ($60.7 million) in series A equity financing, said in a statement that by 2030 it plans to have an annual production capacity of 5 million tonnes. "The project includes a giga-scale green hydrogen plant as an integrated part of the steel production facility," it said. The European Union has made hydrogen a key part of its plan to eliminate its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and is betting on a rapid scale-up to decarbonise steel, heavy transport and chemicals.
