CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.: For the second time in five years, workers at Volkswagen AG's Chattanooga, Tennessee, assembly plant have been voting this week on whether to unionize, potentially handing the United Auto Workers its first toehold in the U.S. South. The vote by 1,700 workers at VW's Chattanooga plant, which makes the Passat sedan and the Atlas SUV, comes at a pivotal time for the UAW. By Christopher Hume Star Columnist Mon., May 6, 2019 By the time Ontario Premier Doug Ford is finished with Toronto, the city will be lucky if it’s allowed to hire a dogcatcher without Queen’s Park first passing enabling legislation. Mayor John Tory will want to keep his short pants close at hand. Forget about governing by disruption, Ford’s gleeful politics of destruction have wreaked havoc across the province, nowhere more so than in its largest city, which he is remaking as fast as the legislative process will allow. Tom Ford has come early to rearrange the furniture. He thinks that the already stylish room in the hottest new private club in town, the San Vicente Bungalows, could be even more captivating. So a team of eight club staff members gets busy under his direction, pulling a potted plant from the terrace for one corner and setting up two dozen glowing amber votive candles.Ford himself redoes the white flowers, plucking out the roses and leaving in the ranunculus, because he doesn’t like mixed blooms. The Murphy bed he can do nothing about. As I enter, the designer is lost in thought, still fantasising about redoing the room in his own preferred palette, draping chocolate brown velvet on the walls.Everything in life can always be more sensual and beautiful, if you think about it.
