Anna, the latest film by acclaimed French writer-director Luc Besson, styles itself as a Cold War-era spy thriller starring Russian model Sasha Luss as a femme fatale working for the KGB. Unfortunately, while its marketing may have aimed to capitalize on audiences’ newfound appreciation for action-oriented movies, Anna’s misguided plot and bland characters fail to raise this film beyond the mediocre. The film’s opening seems promising, as American agents drop like flies at the hands of the KGB. However, that tension is undermined as the rest of the first act is unfortunately meandering yet jarring. The film doesn’t seem to know what to focus on: Anna’s backstory, her discontent with indentured servitude to the KGB or her personal relationships. This underdevelopment seems to permeate the film, especially since the characters’ relationships are not given enough time to become authentic. It had been two years since Andy donated his toys to Bonnie. Bonnie was very shy in her first day at kindergarten but because of Woody's interference, she was able to create her own little figurine from a plastic spork and called him Forky. When the family goes out on a road trip, Forky throws himself out of the vehicle, thinking he was only trash. Frankly, when I saw that Forky in that first trailer, I thought it was corny and shallow. I did not think it was a good story idea at all. Watching the film did not improve my opinion of Forky at all, honestly. Okay, he was sort of funny in his quirky little way, but I felt he … [Read more...] about Movie review: Is ‘Toy Story 4’ really necessary?
Universal's new animation "The Secret Life of Pets 2" managed to lead North American box offices this weekend with an estimated take of $47.1 million even while earning less than half what the first "Pets" film did just three years ago. "Pets 2," produced by Illumination studio, edged out another new release, Fox's "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," to top the three-day weekend, according to industry watcher Exhibitor Relations. "Pets" could also brag about an A- rating from audiences, suggesting it has staying power, according to CinemaScore. It features the voices of Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish and Patton Oswalt in another tale of what pets do when their owners are away. "Dark Phoenix" sold $33 million in tickets, the worst performance in the X-Man franchise's 20-year history and "well below expectations," according to Variety. Website BoxOfficeMojo called it "the worst reviewed film in the X-men franchise ever." And it cost $200 million to make. Said to be the final installment in the … [Read more...] about ‘Secret Life of Pets 2’ defeats ‘X-Men’ to top box office
