Millennial travellers spend way less on accommodation compared to baby boomers – except when it comes to luxury travel, when they are just as willing to pay a little more.This was one of the findings from a global study conducted by TripAdvisor, which was recently released.The annual TripBarometer polled over 23,000 respondents from 33 markets around the world, and there was a significant difference in the travel habit of the young and not-so-young.When it comes to accommodation, baby boomers spend an average of S$1,540, twice as much as millennials, who had a more frugal expenditure of S$675.When it comes to splurging, however, both age groups are prepared to loosen the purse strings. Travel trends for people of the millennial generation are ever-changing. Local tourist agency Dwidayatour digitally researched 1,700 millennial internet users and found some interesting insight, as reported by KompasTravel. Soul-searching is out, idea-searching is in Millennials typically don’t travel to learn something about themselves. Seven of 10 millennial travelers go to the ends of the world to search for new ideas and stimulate their creative bones. “The fresh ideas gathered from their travels will be applied in their work, businesses or start-up companies. The point of traveling is no longer to refresh, but to build one’s creativity for work,” said Dwidayatour’s commercial vice-president, Hendriyapto, on Friday. Since the early 2000s, Hollywood has shown how a consumptive culture causes destructive addictions. In some cases, these addictions can even become “contagious”. A case in point is Confessions of a Shopaholic. Through this film, Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) portrays the millions of cinema-goers who share her habit of using credit card debt to fund an obsessive lifestyle. Meanwhile, The Joneses depicts a consumptive lifestyle by a harmonious and wealthy family who push their neighbors to buy the luxury products that they show off.
