Tesla boss Elon Musk wins defamation trial
The unanimous verdict was returned after about 45 minutes of deliberation on the fourth day of the federal court trial. It was closely watched by legal experts because it is believed to be the first major defamation lawsuit by a private individual to go to trial over tweets. Musk, 48, who had testified during the first two days in his own defence and returned to court on Friday to hear closing arguments, exited the courtroom after the verdict and said: "My faith in humanity is restored." Cave explorer Vernon Unsworth told a throng of reporters he was resigned to his defeat. "I accept the jury's verdict, take it on the chin and get on with my life." The case stems from a public quarrel between Musk and Unsworth, who gained fame for his lead in co-ordinating the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand in July 2018. Unsworth, 64 had chided Musk in a CNN interview for delivering a mini-submarine, which was never used, to the site of the Tham Luang Nang Non … [Read more...] about Tesla boss Elon Musk wins defamation trial
Claremont serial killings trial: The ‘hoarder’ love rival that made alleged Australian serial killer crack
A terrifying, sexually violent attacker or a family man, deeply emotional with pent-up anger? A computer nerd with the steadiest of jobs, working for one organisation for 29 years, or the face of an eerie phantom circling women on Perth’s streets? All were allegedly parts of the complex picture of the life of 50-year-old Bradley Robert Edwards that has begun to emerge at his trial in Western Australia. The Claremont serial killings is a case involving the disappearance of 18-year-old secretary Sarah Spiers, and the killings of two others, childcare worker Jane Rimmer 23, and Ciara Glennon, 27, a lawyer, in 1996-1997. After attending night spots in Claremont, a wealthy western suburb of Perth, Western Australia, all three women disappeared in similar circumstances leading police to suspect that an unidentified serial killer was the offender. The case, described as the state’s biggest, longest running, and most expensive investigation, remains unsolved. However, in 2016, a … [Read more...] about Claremont serial killings trial: The ‘hoarder’ love rival that made alleged Australian serial killer crack
‘Faith in Humanity Restored’: Tesla Boss Elon Musk Wins Defamation Trial Sparked by ‘Pedo Guy’ Tweet
Tesla Inc boss Elon Musk emerged victorious on Friday from a defamation trial as a federal court jury swiftly rejected the $190 million (£148 million) claim brought against him by a British cave explorer who Musk had branded a "pedo guy" on Twitter. The unanimous verdict by a jury of five women and three men was returned after roughly 45 minutes of deliberation on the fourth day of Musk's trial. The case has been closely watched by legal experts because it is believed to be the first major defamation lawsuit by a private individual to go to trial over tweets. The outcome was a triumph for Musk, whose mercurial behaviour in a number of instances last year came under close scrutiny from federal regulators and shareholders of Tesla, his Silicon Valley-based electric car manufacturer. L. Lin Wood, a high-profile trial lawyer who led the legal team for the plaintiff, Vernon Unsworth, said the jury's decision signals a higher legal threshold for challenging libellous material on social … [Read more...] about ‘Faith in Humanity Restored’: Tesla Boss Elon Musk Wins Defamation Trial Sparked by ‘Pedo Guy’ Tweet
