NEW DELHI: As per Income Tax Law, any individual who is resident in India and whose total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh is entitled to claim rebate under section 87A. The finance minister, Arun Jaitley, has recently proposed to slash the tax rate for individuals in the lowest income tax slab – Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh – to 5% instead of 10%. This means, the existing rebate under Section 87A will be reduced to Rs 2,500 from the existing Rs 5,000 for individuals earning between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh. The bebate under Section 87A of IT Act is available in the form of deduction from the tax liability. Rebate under section 87A will be lower of 100 per cent of income-tax liability or Rs 2,500. In other words, if the tax liability exceeds Rs 2,500, rebate will be available to the extent of Rs 2,500 only and no rebate will be available if the total income (i.e. taxable income) exceeds Rs 3.5 lakh. Islamabad: US President Donald Trump thanked Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for Pakistan's effort in facilitating the release of an American and an Australian who were held hostage by the Taliban since 2016 in Afghanistan. A statement issued by Pak PM's Office said that PM Imran Khan and US President Trump discussed bilateral and regional issues during a telephonic conversation on Thursday. “Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the advancement of Afghan peace and reconciliation process for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan,” a government statement said, reported by The New York Times. During the phone call, Imran Khan termed the release of two Western hostages by the Taliban in Afghanistan as a "positive development", saying Pakistan was happy that the duo was safe and free. WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump thanked Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani for their support in the release of an American and an Australian hostages held by Taliban since 2016, the White House said. On Tuesday, Australian Timothy Weeks, 50, and Kevin King, 63, an American, were handed over to US forces in Afghanistan's southern Zabul province. In return, the Afghan government freed three high-ranking Taliban prisoners. The three members of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network who were released include Anas Haqqani, Haji Mali Khan and Hafiz Rashid. The two separate calls were made by Trump on Thursday, the White House said. In his phone call with Khan, Trump thanked for Pakistan's support for the recovery of the two hostages, the White House said in a readout of the call.
