The University of Indonesia (UI) once again leads the nation in the list of the most influential universities in emerging-economy countries, as the university is included in the top-100 in a ranking released by Times Higher Education (THE), the magazine behind the world’s most influential university rankings. The university leaps into the top 100, climbing from 184th position in last year’s chart to 82nd rank -- a position shared with the Beijing Institute of Technology in China -- in the 2019 THE Emerging Economies Rankings. The ranking, launched on Wednesday, includes nearly 450 universities, an increase from 378 last year, located in 43 countries across four continents. New enrolments in the US dropped by 6.6 per cent in 2017-2018, a trend that was first observed in the 2015-2016 academic year. While the US continues to be the destination of choice for foreign students, this year close to half of all institutions reported a drop in numbers of foreign students, with the strongest decline (4 per cent) seen in the Midwest, followed by the West and the South. The drop is being attributed to several factors. Four Indonesian students have won gold medals at the 10th International Exhibition of Inventions (IEI) and third World Invention and Innovation Forum (WIIF) in Fochan, China. Under the guidance of Setho Hadiyusmana, a lecturer at Unair, the students – Novia Tri Handika, Indriani Dwi Wulandari, Nurul Hidayati and Neisya Pratiwindya Sudarsiwi of Airlangga University's (Unair) Nursing Department – developed a therapeutic tea made for those suffering from type 2 diabetes, which won them the top prize. At the event, which drew 300 participants from around the world, the students also won a special award from Thailand. China will allow international students at Chinese universities nationwide to take part-time jobs during their studies to make the country's higher educational system more attractive, the Ministry of Education said in a statement provided to China Daily exclusively. The government has been introducing a number of exploratory changes allowing international students in Beijing and Shanghai to take part-time jobs or internships off campus as long as they obtain approval from their academic institutions and the entry and exit administrative authorities. Every year QS ranks universities around the world using a methodology that evaluates academic reputation, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, as well as international reputation. Using a points system, QS then rates the universities out of 100. They use these numbers to determine the best universities in the world.
