Centre, states should talk on reducing fuel prices: Nirmala Sitharaman
Ahmedabad: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said there should be less burden on consumers and both the Centre and states should talk with each other over reducing taxes on diesel and petrol whose prices have risen sharply in recent times. Asked if the Centre is mulling to reduce cess or other taxes on fuel to give some respite to consumers from high prices of diesel and petrol, she said the question has put her in "dharm-sankat" (dilemma). "No hiding of the fact that the Centre gets revenue from it. Same is the case with states. I agree that there should be less burden on the consumers. "For that, both the Centre and states should talk with each other (for reducing central as well as state taxes on fuel)," she said during an interaction with the students of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA). Earlier in the day, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said there is a need for coordinated action between the centre ... » Learn More about Centre, states should talk on reducing fuel prices: Nirmala Sitharaman
Serena Williams tops Halep at Australian Open quarterfinal
As well as she played at the start of her Australian Open quarterfinal, Serena Williams suddenly was struggling early in the second set. After one mistake against No. 2 seed Simona Halep — who won the last time they played each other — Williams pointed at her racket strings and made a sour face, as if to make clear it wasn't truly her own fault. After another, Williams looked up at her guest box with palms up and asked, “What is happening?” That dismay did not last long. Williams claimed the last five games and beat Halep 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to return to the final four at Melbourne Park for the first time since she won the tournament in 2017. Seeking a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title, Williams set up a showdown against No. 3 Naomi Osaka, who will carry a 19-match winning streak into Thursday's semifinals. “She's Serena,” Osaka said. “I feel really intimidated when I see her on the other side of the court.” This will be their fourth career matchup — all on hard courts — and ... » Learn More about Serena Williams tops Halep at Australian Open quarterfinal

Hong Kong Arts Festival returns to the city with a combination of online, live and recorded productions, including local gems that resonate with the current realities. Rebecca Lo reports. However, the Hong Kong Arts Festival team are ready to roll out the 49th edition of their annual show and give what it takes to make it a success. The festival, which kicks off tomorrow, has seen a few scheduling changes and cancellations already. The local government relaxed the COVID-19-related restrictions on performance venues only a few days ago, which meant the festival opening concert by Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, planned as a live show and subsequently turned into a free online event, is now back in the theater as a live performance with simultaneous online streaming. Rescheduling, cancellations and having to transfer live shows ... » Learn More about Reflections on strange times
