A China-initiated alliance of 12 leading universities from nine countries on six continents vowed on Monday to enhance cooperation on research related to climate change. Universities bear special responsibilities and missions in tackling climate change, He Jiankun, chairman of a committee at Tsinghua University's Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, said on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations climate change conference in Madrid. "Just as other sectors, they should carry out climate actions with initiative," He said. "Meanwhile, universities are tasked with conducting scientific research. They should offer new knowledge and solutions for climate issues by working on new technologies and looking into policies." A 45-year-old senior journalist of a Chandigarh-based English newspaper fought off an unidentified man who molested her at Panjab University’s Botanical Garden here while she was on a routine morning walk around 7.30am on Monday.The journalist, who lives on the campus, said the man, who appeared to be in his mid-forties, stealthily sneaked up behind her, pushed himself on to her, groped her and entered into a scuffle that lasted 15 minutes before she escaped his clutches and ran towards the gate of the garden traumatised, while he vanished “into nothingness”. “Nearly 15 minutes of grappling with him alone, I screamed for someone to hear me, hoping this is not the way my life will end. A Sanskrit professor at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been allegedly attacked by students for supporting his Muslim colleague, Firoz Khan, whose appointment as assistant professor had sent students on protests for the past one month.The Dalit professor is a senior faculty member in the Sanskrit Vidya Dharam Vigyan (SVDV) department where Mr. Khan has been appointed.“I was sitting in a classroom when some students barged in and started abusing me in foul language. They asked me to stop supporting a Muslim’s appointment to the faculty. “I felt unsafe and came out. Some of the students then hurled stones at me and later caught up with me and shoved and pushed me.
