NEW DELHI: India , the world's third-biggest oil importer and consumer, on Friday said the decision by major producers to continue with output cuts as prices move higher could threaten the consumption led-recovery in some countries. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, agreed on Thursday not to increase supply in April as they await a more substantial recovery in demand amid the coronavirus pandemic. Crude prices rose after announcement and are up 33 per cent this year. Brent crude futures for May on Friday rose nearly 1 per cent, to $67.44 a barrel, and are on track for a near 2 per cent gain this week. "As one of the largest crude-consuming countries, India is concerned that such actions by producing countries have the potential to undermine consumption-led recovery and more so hurt consumers, especially in our price-sensitive market," Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan told ... » Learn More about Oil guzzler India says OPEC+ decision to hit economic recovery

India is ‘partly free’, says U.S. thinktank
U.S.-based human rights watchdog Freedom House has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of “driving India toward authoritarianism” with a “hamfisted lockdown”, scapegoating of Muslims, and a crackdown on critics, and downgraded India’s status from ‘Free’ to ‘Partly Free’ , in its annual report. “Under Modi, India appears to have abandoned its potential to serve as a global democratic leader, elevating narrow Hindu nationalist interests at the expense of its founding values of inclusion and equal rights for all,” said Freedom in the World 2021 , which was released on Wednesday. India’s freedom score, calculated using indicators of political rights and civil liberties, dropped four points to 67 this year, pulling the country down into the ‘Partly Free’ category. In a year when social media censorship has been hotly seated, while the government shut down Internet connectivity in Kashmir as well as on Delhi’s borders, India’s Internet freedom score dropped to just 51. ... » Learn More about India is ‘partly free’, says U.S. thinktank
In case you thought petrol @Rs 100 won’t become the new normal just yet, think again
The Indian consumer's hope that petrol @Rs 100 might not become the new normal just yet, may have been dashed. Yesterday, OPEC+ — the grouping of major oil producers — made public its plan to continue with its production cuts till April. It effectively means that if you are headed to the petrol pump, brace yourself to keep paying more for longer than you thought you would. In all likelihood, the move by OPEC+ would push retail fuel prices to new highs in yet more towns and cities in India, putting paid to the hope that Indian consumers may get some relief at last. The Indian government was hoping that oil exporting countries would end the ongoing production cuts by March end, which would have brought local prices down in importing countries like India. Before the important meeting, India's Oil Ministry had sent out requests to OPEC+ to raise production and "bring back some of the price stability", various reports said. However, Saudi Arabia and Russia — the prime players ... » Learn More about In case you thought petrol @Rs 100 won’t become the new normal just yet, think again

With WTC final in sight, India-England gear up for 4th Test
IMAGE: Virat Kohli bats in the nets. Photograph: BCCI/Twitter A ruthless India will not take their foot off the pedal while taking England for another 'spin ride' in the high-stakes Test series finale starting on Thursday, aiming to not just complete another dominant home performance but also realise their World Test Championship dreams. Virat Kohli's men need at least a draw to maintain the current 2-1 scoreline to qualify for the Lord's final against New Zealand while England at best can heal Tim Paine's January scars by letting Australia a lucky passage to the summit clash with a win. While a draw always seems a safe option in a game like this but Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri, with their attacking instincts, wouldn't like to play a defensive game which at times can be counter-productive. India laid a venomous trap on the refurbished Motera and with the pink ball, demolished England inside two days, messing more with their minds than getting any tangible help from the ... » Learn More about With WTC final in sight, India-England gear up for 4th Test
SC says new rules to regulate OTT platforms lack teeth
The Supreme Court on Friday said the government’s new rules to regulate OTT (over-the-top) platforms lacked teeth to punish violators or to screen offensive content even as it protected Amazon Prime Video India Commercial head Aparna Purohit from arrest in the ‘Tandav’ web series row. “We went through your Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules of 2021... these are merely guidelines. There is no provision for punishment or fine... What is the mechanism to control it [content]” Justice Ashok Bhushan, heading a Bench, asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
