BERLIN: The U.S. military will station about 1,500 additional soldiers in Germany by September 2020, adding to more than 33,000 American troops already in the country in a move that could trigger fresh tensions with Russia.Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested last month that NATO forces in eastern Europe posed a threat to Russia, a charge firmly rejected by NATO officials. The U.S. Army's European headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany, said the new forces would be permanently stationed in Germany as "a display of our continued commitment to NATO and our collective resolve to support European security."Sharp criticism of the NATO alliance by U.S. President Donald Trump had triggered fears that Washington could reduce defence spending in Europe and reduce its presence."The addition of these forces increases U.S Army readiness in Europe and ensures we are better able to respond to any crisis," it said. The increased troop levels will still be far below those seen during the … [Read more...] about US military to send 1,500 more soldiers to Germany by late 2020

source USAF Lockheed Martin has been pitching the US Air Force a hybrid between the F-22 and the F-35. The F-22 is the world’s best air-to-air combat plane, and the F-35 has the best sensors and abilities to knock out air defenses. Combining the two would create a jet much better than either one individually. But by creating an all-around better jet could kill the market for the F-35, which has just started to come online and is the most expensive weapons system in history. Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter has cost more money than any weapons system in history, but a bright new idea from the same company could see its best bits gutted and slapped into the world’s deadliest combat jet: The F-22. The F-22’s development started in the 1980s, when computers took up much more space. That didn’t stop Lockheed’s engineers from building a 62-foot-long, 45-foot-wide twin-engine fighter jet with the radar … [Read more...] about The US military is quietly talking about a new hybrid fighter jet that could kill the F-35
Poland marks Army Day with parade, call for US military base Vanessa Gera (Associated Press) - August 16, 2018 - 12:00am WARSAW — Poland's president voiced hope for a permanent US military presence in his country, in a speech as the nation put on a large military parade on its Armed Forces Day holiday yesterday replete with tanks and people marching in historic uniforms. Poland is fearful of Russia's renewed aggression, and President Andrzej Duda said that a permanent presence by the US Army would "scare away every potential attacker." The US military, on its own and as part of a NATO effort, began rotating troops in and out of Poland and other nervous countries on NATO's eastern flank, including Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, after Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in 2014. Poland has recently been lobbying for a permanent US base and more American forces. There hasn't yet been a response on … [Read more...] about Poland marks Army Day with parade, call for US military base
One of the constant refrains among American conservatives is that the US military is the best in the world. Its armed forces are second to none; no other country can come close to competing with it. Paradoxically, these same people, often in the same breath, are quick to also claim that the US military is drastically underfunded and, furthermore, being systematically starved to death. Spending “only” $606 billion on the armed forces – Obama’s last defense budget – is way too little. The Trump administration wants to raise this figure to $686 billion in 2019, ultimately planning on reaching $742 billion by the 2023 fiscal year. The dailyReport Must-reads from across Asia - directly to your inbox OK, fair enough, let’s say that the US military is wasting away, despite somehow still being the strongest army in the world. And let’s say we add another $150 billion to the defense budget. But to do…what? We’ll come back to that later. … [Read more...] about US defense spending: How much is too much?
