Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine found effective in big ‘real world’ test, prevents illness and death

Jerusalem: A ‘real-world’ test of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine in more than half a million people has confirmed that it's very effective at preventing serious illness or death, even after one dose. Results of the test that were published on Wednesday from a mass vaccination campaign in Israel have given strong reassurance that the benefits seen in smaller, limited testing persisted when the vaccine was used much more widely in a general population with various ages and health conditions. The vaccine was 92% effective at preventing severe disease after two shots and 62% after one. Its estimated effectiveness for preventing death was 72% two to three weeks after the first shot, a rate that may improve as immunity builds over time. It seemed as effective in folks over 70 as in younger people. “This is immensely reassuring...Better than I would have guessed,” said the Mayo Clinic's Dr Gregory Poland. Vanderbilt University's Dr Buddy Creech agreed: “Even after one dose we ... » Learn More about Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine found effective in big ‘real world’ test, prevents illness and death

Pfizer-BioNTech testing booster of their Covid-19 vaccine in new trial

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE said on Thursday they are testing a third dose of their Covid-19 vaccine to better understand the immune response against new variants of the virus. They are also in talks with regulatory authorities about testing a vaccine modified to protect specifically against the highly transmissible new variant found in South Africa and elsewhere, known as B.1.351, as a second arm of the same study. The companies believe their current two-dose vaccine will work against the South African variant as well as one found in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. But the studies will allow the vaccine makers to be prepared if and when more protection is necessary, they said. "The rate of mutations in the current virus is higher than expected," Pfizer Chief Scientific Officer Mikael Dolsten said in an interview. "It's a reasonable probability that we would end up with regular boosts. Allowing private hospitals to vaccinate will boost process, says AIIMS director

NEW DELHI : The director of AIIMS , Dr Randeep Guleria , has welcomed the Centre’s decision to allow private hospitals to vaccinate people against Covid-19. The move will help expedite the immunisation process, he said on Wednesday. “We need to develop a strategy where we can keep our death rate down. Therefore, vaccinating people above the age of 60 or those above the age of 45 with comorbidities will be a good step, also opening it up for the private sector ,” Dr Guleria said. India has a huge target to vaccinate at least 30 crore people even in Phase I, he pointed out. Calling the decision to involve private players pragmatic, Dr D S Rana, chairman of board of management at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said, “This will help us cover maximum people in the shortest time.” Dr Rana added that the middle- and upper-class people were willing to bear the cost of vaccination and they just wanted the process to be hassle-free. “This will also reduce the financial burden on ... » Learn More about Allowing private hospitals to vaccinate will boost process, says AIIMS director
