Miami joins F1 calendar in 2022 in push for US fan share

PARIS: The Miami Grand Prix will join the Formula One calendar from the 2022 season, organizers said on Sunday (Monday in Manila), in a 10-year deal that adds a second American race to the championship after the United States GP in Austin. In a statement F1 said that the race will take place at a new track round the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens north of the Florida city. “We are thrilled to announce that Formula 1 will be racing in Miami beginning in 2022,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “The US is a key growth market for us, and we are greatly encouraged by our growing reach in the US which will be further supported by this exciting second race.” He added it would be staged “in the second quarter of next year”. F1 said the track will be 5.41km long with high-speed straights which should allow top speeds of 320 km/h and “multiple overtaking opportunities”. The Hard Rock Stadium is the home of the team Miami Dolphins and also hosted the recent Miami Open tennis ... » Learn More about Miami joins F1 calendar in 2022 in push for US fan share

Nuggets’ Jamal Murray sustains torn ACL, out indefinitely

Jamal Murray #27 of the Denver Nuggets is helped off the court after an injury in their game against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center on April 12, 2021 in San Francisco, California.  Ezra Shaw/Getty Images/AFP Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee and is out indefinitely, the team announced Tuesday morning. Murray, 24, sustained the injury with 50.6 seconds remaining in Denver’s 116-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Monday. His knee buckled as he drove toward the basket and fell to the court, immediately clutching at his left knee and then pounding the court in pain. Gov’t may stop Filipino workers going to Middle East over ‘kafala’

MANILA, Philippines — The government may suspend the deployment of Filipino workers to Middle Eastern countries over the kafala system that has been blamed for abuses against foreign workers, including Filipinos, in Arab countries. “It’s not far-fetched that if they won’t heed the call of our President, I may be ordered to suspend the deployment of OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) to countries that don’t want to abolish the kafala system,” Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said on Wednesday. Bello made the remark a day after President Rodrigo Duterte denounced the visa sponsorship system prevalent in the entire Middle East as “unjust and exploitative” and called for its complete abolition. “They know that the President made the call for the protection of our [workers]. If they won’t heed [his call], our direction is clear and that is to suspend or at least slow down the deployment of our OFWs” to those countries, he added. Expand dialysis coverage, PhilHealth asked

SEN. Ana Theresia “Risa” Hontiveros on Thursday urged the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) to upgrade dialysis coverage from 90 to 144 sessions amid the pandemic. The senator backed the call of advocacy groups urging PhilHealth to increase the free dialysis coverage because the pandemic has brought an “unjust” burden on Filipinos. She said the coverage should also include personal protective equipment (PPE), Covid-19 testing required before sessions as well as other supply costs being passed on to patients. She deplored that patients were having difficulties in using life-saving dialysis machines since hospitals are full. Some of them also lost their jobs and livelihood due to the pandemic. “This is a nightmare beyond comprehension. I ask PhilHealth to consider the full horror story of hospitals these days while improving their policies,” Hontiveros said. The Dialysis PH, a support group for dialysis patients, said patients were waitlisted because the few ... » Learn More about Expand dialysis coverage, PhilHealth asked

‘Shadow and Bone’ is a road that splits in two

I went into Netflix’s new series “Shadow and Bone” cold. I have not read any of the novels in the seven-book young adult fantasy Grishaverse series by author Leigh Bardugo. I am not familiar with the main story nor any of the characters. All I know is that young adult books have the coolest covers and Bardugo’s are among the best. I found the first episode, “A Searing Burst of Light,” laying on the lore rather thick. However, what I saw didn’t make me fall in love with is so much that I had to read the books. I thought, let’s just see how the lore gets explained as it unfolds. As I watched more episodes of the series, it felt like I was watching two separate shows. One is very serious with the classic storyline involving someone who is “the chosen one” or the “prophesied one” (like Luke Skywalker, Paul Atreides and Harry Potter), mixed in with tropes of lovers torn apart and the presence of a brooding, mysterious, dark and powerful figure (Ben Barnes’ General Kirigan). There’s ... » Learn More about ‘Shadow and Bone’ is a road that splits in two

Hospitals on PhilHealth debt: ‘That’s our money, but our hands are tied’

The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) has yet to settle billions of pesos in unpaid health claims by its members to hundreds of private hospitals during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Jose de Grano, president of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. (Phapi), said PhilHealth’s unpaid claims to 700 private hospitals had so far amounted to P28 billion. This covers only the period from March to December 2020, as figures for the current year are not yet available, he said on Thursday. De Grano said the PhilHealth’s debts could reach up to P50 billion if public hospitals and other private health facilities outside Phapi’s membership were included. He said the unpaid claims was also one reason why private hospitals could not expand their bed capacity and comply with a directive from the Department of Health. The Phapi president noted that most private hospitals were still running at full or critical capacity. Most of the health ... » Learn More about Hospitals on PhilHealth debt: ‘That’s our money, but our hands are tied’
