I have been thinking of writing on this topic since three months ago when I heard Dr. Rong Qian of the World Bank give an economic briefing where she said that the high economic growth had not resulted in any meaningful reduction in poverty rate. She said that while the Philippines had one of the world’s highest GDP growth rates, the beneficiaries were predominantly the wealthy elite. In other words high GDPs are only making the rich richer while the poor remain poor. I have also been reading about the rise of populist leaders all over the world attributed to the fact that the masses now believe that their interests are now being threatened by the elite who are not interested in the general interest of the masses; but, in increasing their wealth and power. I read this book WINNERS TAKE ALL: The Elite Charade of Changing the World. The secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) – a research and policy … [Read more...] about A just and living wage

PARIS: The systematic eradication of male chicks is a common practice in the poultry industry, which says it is the only viable option for birds that have no economic value. But the cullings, which were upheld by a German court on Thursday (Jun 13), have long been denounced as inhumane and ethically unacceptable by animal rights activists.WHY?Egg production requires the hatching of millions of chicks every year, with the females sold to be raised and exploited by either individual farmers or commercial poultry farms.Adult roosters, however, produce no eggs and develop far less meat than the so-called "broilers" bred especially for eating. As a result, producers say the male chicks aren't worth the cost of raising to adults. But currently a chick's sex cannot be determined while still in the egg without invasive testing that is both time-consuming and often results in damage or death to the embryo.HOW?After hatching, male chicks are separated from the females, and then mechanically … [Read more...] about Culling of male chicks: A widespread and controversial practice
By THE SIMPLE HOUSEWIFE This recipe came about when I was wondering what to do with just one serving of leftover cooked macaroni with no leftover pasta sauce. This tends to happen in my household because we love to overload our pasta with lots of sauce, or maybe I’m just not good at estimating how much pasta to cook. This one serving of macaroni could start a vicious cycle of leftovers if I were to cook more macaroni to match a newly-opened bottle of sauce so I decided that it would remain as one serving for one person. No opening of a large bottle of sauce and no cooking of more pasta. I decided to use what I had in my fridge to make a sauce for that one serving. Bacon is always good with pasta and a white, cream-based sauce. I hope you will like it as much as my daughter did. It’s so easy and quick to make, and it’s open for modification if you wish to use sausages or smoked meats or fish, or other vegetables like leeks, onions or mushrooms. BACON BITS MACARONI … [Read more...] about A warm and comforting meal

By Ricardo Special to the Star Tues., April 30, 2019 Why do I have such a problem with muffins? When I want to provoke my wife, I tell her that a good muffin is actually just a cupcake! My daughters think I’m dated. And they’re probably right ... But in my mind a muffin is supposed to be “healthy,” and a cupcake is, well, a cup “cake.” I’m actually sad for muffins. I feel like they’re suffering from an identity crisis. Is it a protein-packed breakfast? A light dessert? A travel-friendly snack? Or a miniature cake? There are many people out there who think a muffin is a muffin — a small quick bread — while a cupcake could go either way. Some fast food chains even go so far as to call their cupcakes muffins! As if they were “good for you.” On the other hand, you will never see someone mistake a muffin for a cupcake — as if steak could be chicken. But where does a muffin cross the … [Read more...] about What’s the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?
