Maintaining that the new agricultural laws are an “internal matter” of India, new U.K. High Commissioner to India Alexander Ellis on Friday said the debate in the British House of Commons set for Monday was part of issues linked to India that were quite “regularly debated” there. “Things that happen in India have ripples in the U.K., partly because you do have such a big community in the U.K. So these things get debated,” Mr. Ellis told journalists, explaining that the farm laws and the protests were being discussed as a result of a petition that crossed 1,00,000 signatures, even though the U.K. government’s position was that the issue was an internal one for the Modi government to resolve in India. “As the Indian diaspora grows and becomes more successful in many countries in the world, you’re going to see more of this …. as India grows, becomes more international and ever more significant in the world, there will be more debate about the government’s views,” Mr. Ellis said, but ... » Learn More about Farm laws an internal matter of India: U.K. High Commissioner to India

Not only Punjab, entire country is protesting: Harsimrat Badal on farmers’ protest
New Dehlhi: As India gets ready to for the ‘Chakka Jam’ called by the farmers on Saturday (February 6), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal salmmed the Centre and said it is not only Punjab that is protesting against the farm laws but the entire country, she accused the central government of overlooking the other protests. The former cabinet minister voiced her concern and stated that the central government has misunderstood that only Punjab’s farmers are protesting against the new laws and asserted that it is the entire country that stands with the farmers. "The Government of India has a misunderstanding that only Punjab is agitating. The entire country is protesting, farmers from all states are sitting at protest sites. If they still want to turn a blind eye claiming only Punjab is protesting, then one can't do anything," Badal was quoted as saying by ANI. Earlier in September 2020, Harsimrat Kaur Badal had resigned from her post as the Union minister as ... » Learn More about Not only Punjab, entire country is protesting: Harsimrat Badal on farmers’ protest
Farmers’ protests | Samyukt Kisan Morcha leader hints at nuanced stand on demands
As the farmers protest completed 100 days on the borders of Delhi, senior Samyukt Kisan Morcha leader Darshan Pal said the movement “should not be taking a hard stance on all the issues”. There needs to be “space for discussion” even on the demand to repeal three contentious farm reform laws, he said. However, in an interview with The Hindu on Friday, the veteran Punjab leader added that with expectations having been raised among the people, it would now be difficult for union leaders to back down from their initial positions. For five hours on Saturday, SKM protestors will mark the 100th day of their agitation on the doorsteps of the capital by blockading the Western Peripheral Expressway which surrounds the city and connects the three major protest sites at Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur. Apart from the repeal of the three laws, they are also demanding a legal guarantee of minimum support prices for their crops. Reflecting on the lessons learnt from the last 100 days which can be ... » Learn More about Farmers’ protests | Samyukt Kisan Morcha leader hints at nuanced stand on demands
