New York: Despite its common occurrence, there is still a lot of stigma surrounding miscarriage and many women find that their emotional and psychological needs are unmet as they go through a devastating grieving process. But for some, Instagram has emerged as a tool to cope with such distress, a study says. The study, published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that the content posted by Instagram users included rich descriptions of the medical and physical experiences of miscarriage, and the emotional spectrum of having a miscarriage and coping with those emotions, the social aspect, and family identity. "I find it endlessly fascinating that women are opening up to essentially strangers about things that they hadn't even told their partners or families," says Dr Riley. "But this is how powerful this community is," said Amy Henderson Riley, assistant professor at Jefferson College of Population Health, Thomas Jefferson University, US. Be patient, Supreme Court tells women seeking protection to enter Sabarimala temple
The Supreme Court on Friday advocated “patience” to women of menstruating age who want to exercise their right to enter and worship at Sabarimala temple, saying though the law was in their favour, any judicial order at this time may spark violence in a situation already “explosive”.Two women in their thirties had approached the Supreme Court recently with a plea to direct the Kerala police to provide them protection for their intended pilgrimage to the famed forest temple during the ongoing season. They said a Constitution Bench lifted the ban on women of menstruating age to enter Sabarimala in a majority judgment on September 28, 2018. The State’s refusal to provide them protection was in gross contempt of the judgment, they argued. On November 14, a Bench of five judges, sitting in review of the judgment, referred the fundamental question of whether a woman’s right to worship was subservient to age-old religious customs, faith and traditions, … [Read more...] about Be patient, Supreme Court tells women seeking protection to enter Sabarimala temple
Message to young women with diabetes: Marriage and children, you can have it all!
In the last 21 years, I have been working closely with young women who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes and many of them have voiced a persistent concern and fear: will they be able to lead a fulfilling life as wives and mothers. They seem to have received little or no reassurance from family and friends. Social discrimination, misconceptions and stigma are still creating psychological and emotional problems for these young women. Research shows that societal stigma, shaming or discrimination of people with diabetes has a negative impact on patient self-care and leads to poor treatment outcomes.[i] Women face much more of this than men. They are deemed unfit for marriage and motherhood. They face this stigma on all fronts: from their own family, extended relatives, colleagues at work and from prospective spouses and their families. I would like to clear some of these misconceptions and send out a message of hope and reassurance to these young women. Never assume, always ask the doctor … [Read more...] about Message to young women with diabetes: Marriage and children, you can have it all!
