Ready for change? Singapore’s world-famous shopping belt is getting a makeover. Plans to give Orchard Road a drastic revamp were unveiled on Wednesday (Jan 30) by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and National Parks Board (NParks). The government agencies said that the four sub-precincts – Tanglin, Orchard, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut that make up the 2.4km stretch – will each offer different concepts, attractions, entertainment and events, aimed at strengthening Orchard Road’s position as a lifestyle destination. Here are the suggestions made so far: A mixed-used neighbourhood filled with arts and artisans is what Tanglin can be, with The Tudor Court, for example, used to house more arts, cultural and lifestyle offerings, the agencies said. The Tanglin neighbourhood will offer a stronger arts and artisinal flavour. By Anya Zoledziowski StarMetro Calgary Fri., Aug. 31, 2018 CALGARY—In a surprise court decision Thursday, the Federal Court of Appeal quashed the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project in part because Canada “failed to fulfil the duty to consult owed to Indigenous peoples.” But what does a “duty to consult” entail? Although Canada’s Constitution codifies Indigenous rights, the conversation around consultation didn’t become mainstream until 2004, said Eugene Kung, a lawyer who worked closely with Tsleil-Waututh Nation to stop the pipeline expansion. Kung said that in 2004, the Supreme Court acknowledged Canada’s responsibility to consult Indigenous groups, adding it “affirmed what First Nations had been saying for a long time, which is ‘if you’re going to make decisions that impact our rights, you need to at least talk to us.’” Read more: Article Continued Below … [Read more...] about The court said Ottawa failed to consult Indigenous people on Trans Mountain, but what does meaningful consultation look like?
caption The moon is seen during a lunar eclipse over Cairo, Egypt July 27, 2018. source REUTERS/Amr Abdallah Dalsh The longest total lunar eclipse of the century happened last week, on July 27. Although the event looked stunning from many parts of Earth, a 2014 video from NASA’s Messenger satellite reveals what the event would have looked like from Mercury. On the night of July 27 and the early morning hours of July 28, sky-watchers across the Eastern Hemisphere were treated to the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon are directly aligned, and the moon’s orbit brings it into Earth’s shadow. The moon passes through the darkest region of Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra, which gives the moon a reddish sheen because of the way the sun’s light gets refracted by Earth’s atmosphere. The event captivated people on Earth, who took stunning photos of the “blood … [Read more...] about A NASA satellite revealed what a lunar eclipse looks like from Mercury

caption Smog obscures a view of the George Washington Bridge in New York City, May 1973. source Chester Higgins/Documerica New York City produces twice as much trash as any other mega-city on Earth, according to a recent study. The Environmental Protection Agency has described Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal as “one of the nation’s most extensively contaminated water bodies.” And air pollution, coming largely from transportation and construction, remains a threat to residents. But before the EPA formed in 1970, pollution in NYC was even worse. Soon after the EPA’s founding, the agency dispatched 100 photographers to capture America’s environmental problems in a photo project called Documerica. It shows what the US, from California to Ohio to New York, looked like from 1971 to 1977. Of the 81,000 images the photographers took, more than 20,000 photos were archived, and at least 15,000 have been digitized by the National Archives. … [Read more...] about Vintage EPA photos reveal what New York City looked like before the US regulated pollution
