The National University of Singapore (NUS) is fully committed to comprehensively address the problem of sexualised activities at its orientation camps, but needs the time and space to do so over the next few weeks and months. In his first public comments on the furore over such activities, NUS president Tan Chorh Chuan said there are a wide range of issues to consider and it has called "a time-out" on student-organised orientation activities for now. NUS had announced the suspension of orientation activities last Friday, after it was reported that some students had complained about being pressured into taking part in risque orientation activities. These included the alleged re- enactment of an incestuous rape scene and a dunking incident involving Sheares Hall students. Yesterday, Prof Tan stressed that NUS does not approve of these. Addressing freshmen at the 2016 Freshmen Inauguration Ceremony yesterday, he said: "We make our stand very clear: We do not condone behaviour, ... » Learn More about ‘Time needed’ to review varsity orientation camps

Follow Covid-19 SOP or risk losing Ramadan bazaars this year, warns Melaka CM
MELAKA: Ramadan bazaars will be cancelled without any hesitation if Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) violations continue, says Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali. The Melaka Chief Minister said organisers of such bazaars would also have their operation permits revoked if social distancing and other prerequisite SOPs are disregarded. "Our intention to allow the operations of these bazaars was meant for traders to generate revenue despite some states cancelling it due to the impact of Covid-19. "However, we have to review the permission if such violations continue," he said on Wednesday (April 14). Sulaiman said bazaar organisers who fail to ensure SOP compliance would be replaced at once after their permits are revoked. He was commenting on the report by Melaka government's mouthpiece outlet Melaka Hari Ini on overcrowding at one of the bazaars here on Tuesday (April 13). The report showed a picture of people making a beeline to the bazaar while ... » Learn More about Follow Covid-19 SOP or risk losing Ramadan bazaars this year, warns Melaka CM

’We’re better’: Kimmich insists Bayern can beat PSG
MUNICH: Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is convinced the holders can beat Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) in their Champions League quarter-final second leg to reach the last four. “I believe that we will progress, because we’re the better team,” Kimmich told the club’s website. Bayern need to overturn a 3-2 defeat from last week’s first leg in Munich. “We were the better team in the first leg, but unfortunately the result didn’t correspond to the performance,” added Kimmich. “Nevertheless, I’m confident that we can still turn it around in the second leg.” Despite peppering the PSG goal with 31 shots, 12 on target, Bayern lost the first leg at home after Kylian Mbappe scored twice and Marquinhos also hit the net as PSG had just four shots on target. “In the first leg, they threatened three times and scored three times,” said Kimmich. “Apart from that, I don’t remember Paris having that many chances. “Overall, our ... » Learn More about ’We’re better’: Kimmich insists Bayern can beat PSG

Tuchel’s men take a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, second leg, against Porto on Tuesday before facing Manchester City in the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday. The German won silverware during his time at Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain and has made a big impact since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard in January. OVP hoping to get gov’t backing for its E-Konsulta initiative
MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Vice President has admitted that its E-Konsulta initiative — which offers a free consultation to anyone who is possibly a COVID-19 patient — would be improved significantly if the national government adopted it. On Wednesday morning, Gutierrez was asked during a virtual interview with DABIGC’s Radio Nationwide whether DOH might use the program to manage hospital occupancy, especially in Metro Manila and nearby provinces experiencing a COVID-19 surge. “Well, kung gagawin ng Department of Health ito on a large scale, ‘di hamak na mas maganda dahil definitely mas marami silang resources at tao na puwedeng ma-devote dito,” he said. Abused Vietnamese bride gets free legal aid to divorce Singaporean husband
SINGAPORE - After years of putting up with a husband who abused her, did not allow her to go out of the house and often failed to provide for the family, Vietnamese bride Lyly, 30, decided to leave the Singaporean for good. Lyly (not her real name) said her former husband, a driver in his 60s, often hit her when he was angry, drunk or lost money at gambling. Lyly said in English: "I asked him for money (for family expenses) and he always said 'you need money for what? To give to another man?'" Once, he did not buy any food for her and their son, six, for a week and in desperation after finishing all that could be eaten at home, she called the police for help. She said of the dire straits she was in then: "I don't know where the market is, where the bus stop is. I have no money and I have no friends." She fled with her son to a crisis shelter at least three times, but returned to her former husband each time he promised to change. Still, he continued to hit her and ... » Learn More about Abused Vietnamese bride gets free legal aid to divorce Singaporean husband
