It was initially believed that former mayor U Ye Lwin would be put on trial on February 18 but it was the vice chair of the National League for Democracy (NLD) who was taken to court instead. A source from the courts said U Zaw Myint was remanded at the Mandalay Ohbo Prison and court proceedings was conducted online. The day's sessions did not involve U Ye Lwin. "The police did not take the accused to the court for security concerns. An appointment was made and he was remanded in custody at the Mandalay prison," the source said. U Zaw Myint Maung is facing defamation of state charges following the release of five statements by the central executive committee of the NLD following the Tatmadaw's forced transfer of power. The date for the next trial has been scheduled for February 22. - Translated ... » Learn More about Former Mandalay chief minister face defamation of state charges

Acquisition star Standhardinger puts Ginebra on course for brighter tomorrows
Barangay Ginebra is paving a path to a dynastic future by pulling a page from its past. The Gin Kings acquired NorthPort big man Christian Standhardinger for Greg Slaughter in a one-on-one swap that was reported a year ago, but was locked in the backburner, apparently because of a sabbatical that the Ginebra center took last year. “He’s a throwback to the Ginebra players of old,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said of Standhardinger hours after the trade was announced on Friday morning by the PBA after approval from its trade committee the night before. “I think the (Gin Kings’) fans will appreciate his style of play.” The Inquirer reported the trade in February last year, citing it as one of the reasons Slaughter decided to take a sabbatical from the league. Slaughter flew to the United States but eventually mended fences with San Miguel Corp. top bosses, who signed him to a fresh contract before finally dealing him to the Batang Pier. Slaughter sighting in US
Barangay Ginebra took a break on Friday, ahead of the PBA’s move to suspend team practices and other basketball-related activities. Halfway around the world, however, its former big man, Greg Slaughter, was putting in the work. Slaughter posted on his Instagram account three images showing him and Chris Ellis, another former Gin King, working on their shooting in an undisclosed court in the United States. The caption to the big man’s entry read two dragon emojis, “grind,” and a hashtag: #DoubleDragon. Slaughter announced a sudden sabbatical from the PBA on Feb. 8, sending the crowd darlings in disarray and leaving the basketball world in a fog of speculation. Ellis, meanwhile, had been Awol for two years, following his trade to Blackwater in 2017. Recently, he was spotted in Thailand, playing for Lao club Luang Prabang in the Thai Basketball Super League. Commentary: What Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam should do next
LONDON: I do not know Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s embattled chief executive, very well. She worked for my administration when I was governor there. Diligent and well regarded – and Catholic, like many others in the then-colony’s civil service – she had been educated at Hong Kong University and at Cambridge. When I left in 1997, after sovereignty over the city was returned to China, she was rising through the ranks of the Treasury. In most administrations, the cleverest usually seem to gravitate to the economic departments, looking after the cash. I do not recall ever hearing a bad word about her. READ: Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s steely leader meets her match, a commentary Yet today, Lam finds herself lonely and beleaguered, although it is unclear whether she should take all the blame for what has happened to her. In any case, she must now display real leadership to ease the heightening tensions in the city. Lam must have known what she was in for when she became chief ... » Learn More about Commentary: What Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam should do next
More cases of Covid variants detected
Thirty new cases of the B117, or the so-called United Kingdom variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), have been detected in the country, alongside the first six cases of the B1351 or the South African variant, the Department of Health said on Tuesday. It also reported two cases of mutations of interest. The new cases were part of the eighth batch of 350 samples sequenced by the Philippine Genome Center in the past week. The B1351 variant, which is said to have a higher transmissibility and has a potential impact on vaccine efficacy, was detected in three local cases in Pasay City, two returning overseas Filipinos from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, and one unverified person. Two of the Pasay cases are active and are being managed by the city, while the third, a 40-year-old male, has recovered. Separately, 30 new cases of the UK variant were reported — 20 returning Filipinos from the Middle East, Singapore and the United States; three local cases from the ... » Learn More about More cases of Covid variants detected
‘Doctors have right to choose vaccine brand’
The government had “no objection” if the country’s doctors and other health workers would prefer to choose coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines developed by Western manufacturers, according to President Rodrigo Duterte. In his weekly public address aired over state-run PTV-4 on Monday night, Duterte said he respected the “right” of medical frontliners to pick the vaccine brand of their choice. “Even the doctors, some are not quite keen [with] Sinovac, but that’s their right. They want maybe the US [brands]. It could be AstraZeneca, it could be Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson is US talaga (really). It could be Moderna…Wala kaming objections diyan kung ayaw ninyo (We have no objection to that),” he added. The President said the health workers could wait to get inoculated if they refused to take the Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac. “Maghintay na lang kayo ‘pag magdating ng bakuna (You may wait for the arrival of the ... » Learn More about ‘Doctors have right to choose vaccine brand’
