LONDON -- Liverpool warmed-up for the Champions League final in style by ensuring they are back in the competition next season as Mohamed Salah set a new Premier League record of 32 goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Brighton on Sunday. Victory for Liverpool meant it didn't matter what fifth-placed Chelsea did at Newcastle, but they failed to put any sort of pressure on the Champions League finalists by succumbing limply to a 3-0 defeat at St. James's Park. Gabriel Jesus's stoppage time winner for Manchester City in a 1-0 victory at Southampton saw the champions set another record landmark by becoming the first side in English top flight history to reach 100 points. At the other end of the table, Swansea's seven-season stay in the Premier League came to an end as they were relegated to the Championship after a 2-1 defeat by Stoke. Liverpool faced the uncomfortable scenario of travelling to Kiev to face the might of Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 26 having to win to qualify … [Read more...] about News Salah steers Liverpool into Champions League at Chelsea’s expense
By Laura Armstrong Staff Reporter Sat., March 3, 2018 There was a festive atmosphere at BMO Field heading into Saturday’s Toronto FC season opener against the Columbus Crew. It wasn’t the Reds’ first home game since their MLS Cup victory in December, but the curtain-raiser felt more like an event than Tuesday’s visit by the Colorado Rapids in CONCACAF Champions League play. It was played at midday, for one — no evening rush hour to navigate on the way to the field. The sun was shining. The temperature was reasonable for the first weekend in March. And unlike the Champions League — a condensed tournament where every game can be make or break — the Reds know the Major League Soccer season is a marathon, not a sprint. They beat the Crew last November on their way to the most successful season in league history. Ten flags installed in BMO Field’s north end symbolize the trophies they have earned, overshadowing … [Read more...] about Reds trot out hardware from record-breaking season, then drop 2-0 decision to Columbus Crew at BMO Field. By Laura Armstrong Staff Reporter Wed., Feb. 21, 2018 You know it’s cold when Nick Hagglund wears a long-sleeved jersey. The Toronto FC defender has never particularly minded frigid temperatures, typically favouring a short-sleeved top over bundling up during games. But in dressing for the coldest match ever played between two Major League Soccer teams — it was minus-13 C in Denver when the MLS champion Reds kicked off against the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday night in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions’ League’s round of 16 — Hagglund chose the extra layer as Toronto put up a 2-0 victory in its first competitive match of the year. The heat is now on Colorado, which would need to score three unanswered goals in the return leg at BMO Field next Tuesday to advance to the quarter-finals in early March. The Rapids, a team still searching for its identity as it tries to familiarize itself with a new coach, new faces and a new … [Read more...] about Toronto FC opens Champions League quest with win over Colorado
The last-16 tie against Sevilla marks the Old Trafford club's first appearance beyond the group stage since 2014, when they beat Olympiakos before losing to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. "I normally say that Champions League dreams start around the quarter-finals and not yet," Mourinho warned as he spoke at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium on the eve of the first leg against the Spanish side. "I never thought I would win it with Porto or Inter before reaching the quarter-finals. Some clubs are in this moment more ready to win it, but when you reach the quarter-finals that is when any team can feel that anything can happen." The Olympiakos tie, during David Moyes's ill-fated reign, remains United's only victory in the knockout rounds since their defeat against Barcelona in the 2011 final. That means United, who only qualified for this season's Champions League by winning the Europa League, are having to prove themselves again at this level. Nevertheless, they are expected to … [Read more...] about Too soon to judge Man United’s Champions League chances, says Mourinho
