Like every year, there are several contenders for Person of the Year, 2018. I thought of Fortnite, the gaming sensation, but it pales in front of the Chinese checkers between Trump and Jinping. McCain and Bush’s demise reminded us of Vietnam, Iraq and the Cold War. On the centenary of Armistice, a new war may have just begun. Trade conflict is a small part of a larger battle. America’s ‘Tariff man’ should better know that his tantrums can trample Mexico or Canada, but it’s difficult to trump China. Remember, China and India accounted for over half of global GDP two centuries ago. It is not the West’s sunset time yet, but the clock is reversing. US hegemony is challenged as China gradually regains its polar position. Yes, China is ascending a great wall of debt, but its will to dominate is taller. Arrest a CFO, impose tariffs, block investments or play military games; nothing would cut the Middle Kingdom’s ambitions. The boundaries of … [Read more...] about Person of the Year: Definitely not Trump, Modi, Mbappe, MeToo brigade, Fed or FAANG!

President Donald Trump said Wednesday Beijing so far has not made sufficient concessions in trade talks, making him reluctant to conclude a bargain. "I can tell you this. China would much rather make a trade deal than I would," he told reporters while touring a computer manufacturing facility that produces computers for Apple. "I don't think they're stepping up to the level that I want." Wall Street retreated further from record highs on Wednesday as pessimism mounted among investors about the chances for a deal to bring an end to the lingering trade dispute. Trump on October 11 announced a "phase one" deal resolving important US grievances about Chinese trade and currency practices. But more than a month later, the two sides appear no closer to finalizing the text of any agreement. China has insisted on a rollback of existing tariffs, which Trump said he has not agreed to. American officials want large purchases of US farm exports, which may be unworkable for Beijing. … [Read more...] about China ‘not stepping up’ in trade talks: Donald Trump
TOKYO: Global shares slid on Thursday as a fresh row between Washington and Beijing over US bills on Hong Kong could complicate their trade negotiation and delay a "phase one" deal that investors had initially hoped to be inked by now. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.2 per cent, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng shedding 2 per cent while Japan's Nikkei dropped 1.6 per cent. On Wall Street, all three major indexes fell, with the S&P 500 losing 0.38 per cent. The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed two bills intended to support protesters in Hong Kong and send a warning to China about human rights. The legislation, which has angered Beijing, has been sent to the White House for President Donald Trump's approval. A person familiar … [Read more...] about Shares stumble as China-US row over Hong Kong clouds trade deal outlook

LONDON: Mona Lisa's famed smile may be forced, according to a study which suggests that Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci deliberately portrayed her that way. Researchers at St George's, University of London in the UK set out to investigate the truth of Mona Lisa's expression and apply neuroscientific principles to the world's best-known painting. They investigated the mechanism of the expression and used a 'chimeric face' technique; cutting the mouth in half and placing each half alongside its mirror image. The two chimeric images were judged by a group of 42 healthy subjects and rated according to the expression perceived. The subjects agreed that the left-left image showed happiness, while the right-right side image was less expressive, being perceived as neutral or even sad. The research, published in the journal Cortex, concluded that the Mona Lisa is smiling asymmetrically. The researchers, including Luca Marsili of the University of Cincinnati in the US and Matteo … [Read more...] about Believe it or not: Mona Lisa’s famed smile may be forced
