After years of waiting and very limited rollouts, RCS or Rich Communication Services is finally available to Android users in the US. Android Messages product Manager Sanaz Ahari confirmed on December 13 that the American RCS rollout was complete.Hi everyone! RCS is now available to all users in US as of Monday. Make sure to update both Messages and Carrier Services.— Sanaz (@sanazahari) December 12, 2019 Beyond America, RCS is available in France, Mexico and the UK and Google is still working on support for more regions and third-party apps. So, it will clearly take a bit before others, say India, might get a rollout. While we wait, it will do good to remember that RCS was discussed in India when WhatsApp was pulled up for not having servers in the country and RCS was being considered as a better, more secure, alternative to messaging. So, what exactly is RCS?RCS is an online protocol chosen by the GSM Association (that represents a whole bunch of organizations in the mobile … [Read more...] about RCS: What is it and does it make sense?

By Chiara Remondini To you, it’s a garbage dump. To Italian entrepreneur Giulio Bonazzi, it’s the launchpad for a Stella McCartney handbag or a pair of Levi’s jeans. “When I look at a landfill, I see a goldmine,” Bonazzi, the founder and chief executive officer of nylon manufacturer Aquafil, said in an interview. As volumes of plastic-based waste reach a tipping point in oceans and trash heaps around the world, Bonazzi’s company is recycling the material and turning it into nylon used to make upscale apparel and accessories. And with heightened consumer awareness and tougher environmental rules, the CEO sees unlimited potential for sales of the company’s Econyl thread. The yarn is made from recycled material which may have started life as carpet or industrial plastic, or even part of an abandoned fishing net -- an increasingly promising area for recycling. “Consumer demand for new products is almost endless, but the planet’s … [Read more...] about It’s a goldmine, not a landfill: This Italian entrepreneur uses garbage to make upscale accessories
'That only a certain Mumbai story -- look at Salaam Bombay and Slumdog Millionaire for other examples -- gets made when an international audience is as much a target as the desi viewer, should invoke questions of representation,' notes Vikram Johri. In the first scene of the newly released Netflix adaptation of Vikram Chandra's novel, Sacred Games, Jojo Mascarenhas' (played by Surveen Chawla) Pomeranian is thrown outside an apartment building by her consort Ganesh Gaitonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui). In the original novel, the poor creature is thrown out of a moving car, which does not make it less painful, but at least on the page, one is spared the harrowing cries of the dying animal. That first scene encapsulates this Phantom Pictures' adaptation. Take what you need from the original, pack it with darkness to give it the aura of respectability, mute the colours to make it eye-catchingly dreary and purportedly seductive, and you have the test case for Netflix's foray into … [Read more...] about What makes
MUMBAI: Ride-hailing major Uber is in discussions to invest $100-200 million in fresh capital as part of the sale of its India food-delivery business to local rival Zomato, said multiple people directly aware of the transaction. The investment will come into the combined entity of Zomato and UberEats, making the fund infusion an integral part of the share-swap deal between the two, sources close to the matter said. If the merger goes through, Zomato and UberEats may emerge as the biggest by number of orders and size ahead of Swiggy in a hotly contested and cash-intensive online food delivery market. “While the agreement is not signed yet, they are in a period of exclusivity, which means both parties cannot engage with others. Uber’s capital commitment can range between $100 million and $200 million, but this may be along with a few other investment funds,” said one of the persons. Another said: “Zomato will go ahead with the acquisition only if Uber invests … [Read more...] about Zomato-UberEats deal: Cab company may invest up to $200 million
The stakes are high and the issues complex. This is how to make sense of it all. WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN UNION? West Germany, France and four other nations formed the European Economic Community in 1957, determined to banish forever the bloodshed of two world wars. The grouping became the EU in 1993 and has grown into a 28-nation bloc of more than 500 million people stretching from Ireland to the Aegean Sea, with substantial powers over member states’ laws, economies and social policies. It has its own parliament, central bank and 19 EU members use a common currency, the euro. WHY IS BRITAIN CONSIDERING LEAVING? Britain joined the bloc in 1973, but many Britons feel their island nation — a former imperial power with strong ties to the United States — is fundamentally different to its European neighbours. Anti-EU Britons resent everything from fishing quotas to fruit sizes being decided in Brussels. The anti-EU view is especially strong in the Conservative Party of … [Read more...] about What does it all mean? Brexit Brexplained
