Srinagar: For two consecutive days, Sumaira Wani (18) left her home early in the morning, braving bone-chilling winter cold, to reach the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office 30 kilometers away from her home in south Kashmir’s Kokernag. She reached the office in Anantnag town 20 minutes before its time of opening. To her disappointment, on both the days she found huge crowd waiting outside the IT section of the office, who had gathered there to avail internet facility, like her. Wani aspires to be a doctor and is awaiting the result for her 12th class exam for which she appeared recently. She has to appear in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)—all India level common entrance exam for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses—to fulfill her dream of becoming a cardiologist. But submitting the form in absence of internet has been a daunting task for many. Internet facility was snapped in Valley on August 5, hours before the Centre revoked J&K’s … [Read more...] about Internet Express: On the Train That Takes Kashmiris Online for a Few Hours Each Day
Why do i keep losing internet connection
Minneapolis: When Liu Jingyao introduced herself, in the lobby of her apartment building, I didn’t recognize her. It was a puzzling feeling. For an entire year, photos of her had blanketed the Chinese internet. Like tens of millions of other Chinese, I had watched and rewatched surveillance video of her in this very building. She was one of the most talked about and mysterious women in China, and I thought I knew what she looked like. In the video, she wanders the halls of a mazelike building, with a man trailing along. They get in and out of several elevators. She seems unsure about how to get to her apartment. She wears striking waist-length hair and a long, dark knit dress. She doesn’t look glamorous, exactly, but for a 21-year-old college junior, she is dressed smartly. But on a morning in early August, she greeted me in a loosefitting checkered dress. Now 22, she looked pale and nervous. Her lips were chapped. She invited me upstairs and began an intense conversation … [Read more...] about She Accused a Tech Billionaire of Rape. Global card companies like Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. are losing market share to upstarts in the world’s most innovative payments market: India.Transactions through India’s homegrown Unified Payments Interface — which allows mobile apps run by retailers, airlines and other firms to take payment directly from bank accounts — reached almost half the value of debit and credit cards swiped at stores last month, central bank data show. The surge in UPI transactions has taken place since 2016 when the interface was set up by an umbrella organisation of Indian banks. Mastercard, in contrast, has built up its business in India over three decades.“The introduction of UPI in August 2016 led to the creation of a wealth of new innovative payment solutions, and the adoption rates of UPI payments are truly spectacular,” US-based Fidelity National Information Services Inc. said in a December 2017 report. Q How does a fully charged mobile phone lose its charge when left unused for several days together?A Kingshuk RoyIISER, PuneLithium-ion battery chemistries are associated with self-discharge phenomena. A passivation layer develops on the electrodes over time (on performing several charging-discharging cycles) which results in self-discharging of the battery. It means internal chemical reactions reduce the stored charge of the battery without any connection between the electrodes or any external circuit. Studies show a self-discharge rate of Li-ion battery is 5% in 24 hours, then 1–2% per month. It must be borne in mind that even when the phone is kept idle, there are a lot of applications working in the background like phone-watch, calender, to name a few. These applications in-turn cause a charge loss.Q How does water rise up tall trees during autumn and winter when there is very less water evaporation from leaves?A Senthil SubramanianSouth Dakota State University, U.S.During … [Read more...] about Question Corner: How does a fully charged mobile phone lose its charge when left unused?
