For those who have been living in Sengkang, they will know about a cafe called Legend, which is located at the corner of Anchorvale Community Centre, by the scenic riverside park. It was where I originally proposed to meet the People's Action Party (PAP) team who are facing off the Workers' Party team in this hotly-contested Sengkang GRC. The cafe, as part of the Starker group , has unfortunately shut down recently due to Covid-19 -- one of the many SMEs in Singapore affected by the economic impacts of the pandemic. And I got to find out about the plight of Legend cafe through the 15-year Sengkang West MP, Lam Pin Min, as we settled at a McDonald's outlet in Anchorvale on July 7 morning with the rest of Sengkang PAP team. This new PAP team consists of labour chief, Ng Chee Meng, Lam, as well as Amrin Amin who used to serve in Sembawang GRC and PAP new face Raymond Lye. The closure of the Legend cafe affects me on an emotional level. This is a place that adds to the ... » Learn More about ‘Got talk, got plans, got action’: Sengkang PAP team ready to foster new town identity with residents
Why does cape town have a water crisis
Thousands of migrants have converged under the bridge that connects Del Rio, Texas, and Mexico's Ciudad Acuña, creating a makeshift camp with few basic services in intense heat in the latest border emergency facing US President Joe Biden. Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano said that as of early Thursday evening, September 16, around 10,503 migrants were under the Del Rio International Bridge, up from 8,200 in the morning. Food and water has been scarce, around 20 migrants told Reuters, and temperatures have risen to around 99 Fahrenheit (37 Celsius). Reuters witnessed hundreds of migrants wading through the Rio Grande river and back into Mexico to stock up on essentials they say they are not receiving on the American side. The migrants are mostly Haitians, with Cubans, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans also present. The squalid conditions are reflective of the humanitarian challenge facing Biden as border arrests hover around 20-year highs . German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the flooding that has devastated parts of Europe as "terrifying" on Sunday after the death toll across the region rose to 188 and a district of Bavaria was battered by the extreme weather. Merkel promised swift financial aid after visiting one of the areas worst affected by the record rainfall and floods that have killed at least 157 in Germany alone in recent days, in the country's worst natural disaster in almost six decades. She also said governments would have to get better and faster in their efforts to tackle the impact of climate change only days after Europe outlined a package of steps towards "net zero" emissions by the middle of the century. "It is terrifying," she told residents of the small town of Adenau in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. "The German language can barely describe the devastation that's taken place." As efforts continued to track down missing people, the devastation continued on ... » Learn More about Germany’s Merkel laments ‘terrifying’ floods as death toll rises to 188
Resale flat prices are at their highest in around eight years, and it’s painful for first-time flat buyers. In this Covid-19 environment, with high risks of construction delays, picking between BTO and resale is the proverbial “rock and a hard place” scenario. However, have we developed a skewed perspective of how big the price difference really is? Here’s a look at how the price gap between BTO and resale HDB flats has changed over the years: How did we derive the data for the following? The following is based on transaction data from HDB. From here, we derived the average resale flat price for the given year and flat type. We then compared it to the average BTO price for the estate and flat type, in the given year. As some of the information – such as BTO prices for some areas and years – are patchy, there is invariably some room for error. More recent data will be more accurate, as HDB does show the likely sale price during a launch exercise (but the information for past ... » Learn More about BTO-to-resale price gap: Are they always the same? Japanese prime minister Yoshihide Suga has announced he will not seek re-election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in October, which will effectively end his tenure in the top job after only one year. What will this mean for Japanese politics with a general election due later in the year? Q: Why has Suga made this decision now and where does this leave the ruling LDP? Suga’s decision to resign was an abrupt change of course . The previous day he met with the LDP’s leadership to announce his intention to run for a second term as leader. The fifth COVID wave, triggered by the delta variant and poor crisis communication , has been his undoing. This led to declining support both within his party and among the public, jeopardizing the LDP’s prospects of winning in the upcoming elections. It is difficult to characterize Suga’s short reign. An uncharismatic figure, he had no overarching message, few signature policies, and no “vision” for ... » Learn More about Why Japan’s PM Suga unexpectedly stepped down – and what happens next
After a long string of lockdowns, what was once BBR by Alain Ducasse has emerged refreshed from its hiatus. Set in Raffles Hotel Singapore, Osteria BBR remains the brainchild of this legendary French chef, but the spotlight has shifted from broadly Mediterranean fare to a focus on the Italian Riviera. This new chapter serves up all the breezy warmth of coastal Italy – fresh seafood , homemade pastas, and rustic classics taken up a notch. Housed in the hotel’s iconic Bar & Billiard Room, the airy space is little changed. There’s the behemoth open kitchen with its shimmering sea blues and gleaming bronze, where newly appointed Chef de Cuisine Francesco Soletti presides. Tomato-red couches set off a breezy palette of whites, and adding to the laidback vibes, servers run about clad in suits and white sneakers. If you’re heading down for dinner, get there early to ring in aperitivo as the Italians do. Between 3pm to 8pm daily, you can snag classic Italian cocktails like the ... » Learn More about Restaurant review: Osteria BBR by Alain Ducasse returns with a whiff of coastal Italy at Raffles Hotel
In the 1990s, Japan's emerging phenomenon of hikikomori - young people shutting themselves away from society - prompted much hand-wringing, self-reflection and cultural criticism. Two decades later, the pressures that caused thousands of young Japanese to shun the outside world have grown more acute. More alarmingly, a toxic mix of intense social isolation and changing gender dynamics have contributed to several cases of "incels" - involuntarily celibate young men - violently targeting women. In neighbouring South Korea, where societal changes have also produced a challenge to traditional gender roles, lawmakers have recently grappled with the phenomenon of "semen terrorism" and whether it should be treated as a sex crime. Last month, 36-year-old Yusuke Tsushima attacked other passengers on a train in west Tokyo with a knife. During the rampage, ten people were injured, including a 20-year-old university student who sustained at least ten stab wounds to her back and chest. ... » Learn More about What’s driving Japan’s incel violence and South Korea’s ‘semen terrorism’?
