Gold imports slide for a fifth month as economy slows
By Shruti Srivastava and Swansy Afonso India’s gold imports in November declined for the fifth month as elevated prices and the slowest economic growth in six years curbed demand during the peak wedding season. Inbound shipments dropped 19 per cent from a year earlier to 56.1 tons, according to a person familiar with the data, who declined to be named as the information isn’t public. That makes it the lowest shipment for the month since at least 2015, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. Total overseas purchases slid 15 per cent from year earlier to 597.5 tons during the 11 months through November, the person said. Finance Ministry spokesman Rajesh Malhotra wasn’t immediately available for comment. Imports in the world’s second-biggest consumer have been falling as jewelers have been cutting purchases on poor demand. New Delhi: Showing no signs of cooling down, retail onion prices have continued to spiral, touching as high as Rs 165/kg on Friday even as the government grapples to boost the supplies through imports. The government in Parliament informed that imported onions will arrive by January 20. In most cities, onion was quoting above Rs 100/kg in the retail markets, while at Nashik in Maharashtra – the key producing centre – the rates were ruling at Rs 75/kg on Friday, as per the data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry. Retail onion prices were ruling high at Rs 165/kg in Panaji (Goa), Rs 160/kg in Mayabunder (Andaman) and Rs 150/kg in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Wayanad in Kerala on Friday. Onion was sold at Rs 140/kg in Kolkata, Chennai and some places in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Rs 130/kg in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack (Odisha), Rs 120/kg in Gurgoan (Haryana) and Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), and Rs 100/kg in most cities tracked by the ministry. Video PlayerClose BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China is working on tax exemptions on part of the soybeans and pork imported from the United States in light of applications submitted by related enterprises, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said Friday. The commission will dedicate a range of goods to be excluded from tariff countermeasures against the U.S. Section 301 measure, it said. According to domestic needs, Chinese enterprises import a certain amount of goods from the United States through market-based procurement.
