Story of human rights in India: Officers protecting their buddies
A recent issue that has come to light after Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur was nominated for contesting the Bhopal Lok Sabha seat is her physical torture in custody. It is a matter of fact that she, Colonel Shrikant Purohit and others arrested in the Malegaon blast case of 29.9.2008 had been physically and mentally tortured. Handlers, not leaders Anubhuti Now, even our beloved Prime Minister has claimed that he too has been subjected to such torture and he too is a victim. Hence, it is indeed a undeniable fact that human rights are violated for arm twisting those involved in a case. Enactment of Protection of Human Rights Act Why UNHRC didn't rely on NHRC written an article on the UNHRC report . The relevance of cross-referencing here is to bring to fore one of the perils of continuing with Article 370. But what is more paramount to the context is that this Act stipulated the constitution of a National Human Rights Commission. Farm laws are death warrants for farmers, says Arvind Kejriwal
Describing the contentious farm laws as “death warrants” for farmers, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made Aam Admi Party’s political ambition to cross over Yamuna into Uttar Pradesh clear at a kisan panchayat in Meerut on Sunday. Promising to control erring sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh on the lines of power distribution companies in Delhi, Mr Kejriwal asked the gathering to vote for a party with the right intent. He said farmers were in pain for 70 years because they have been cheated by different governments and parties. Now the three farm laws have made it a matter of life and death. “All that the farmer has been asking for is the right price of his produce,” he said. Party manifestoes, he said, promise the right price of their crops but when these parties come to power, they forget about their commitment. Why doctors dislike Bengal’s new health law
They say new rules that make over-billing by private hospitals a criminal offence will hurt their ability to treat patients properly, says Subir Roy. Illustrations: Uttam Ghosh/ Rediff.com . Private hospitals and nursing homes in West Bengal have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Last month, a 16-year-old girl died at a Kolkata hospital after she was admitted with stomach pain. Her relatives alleged medical negligence and a local mob damaged the hospital and beat up at least one doctor. Also in the news were three nursing homes in north Bengal being investigated for running a child racket. A week after the vandalism, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting at the Kolkata Town Hall with the bigwigs of several leading private hospitals and gave them a dressing down, pulling up individuals and naming names. She also announced the setting up of a regulatory commission to monitor private healthcare setups and the tabling of a bill in the state assembly ... » Learn More about Why doctors dislike Bengal’s new health law
Startup jobs seen aplenty in 2021 as post-pandemic hiring gathers pace
Mumbai: Startups are likely to witness a strong hiring uptick this year, courtesy a bounceback in business and revenue, with growth for some even surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The pace of recruitment will increase this year, said about 72% of startup founders surveyed by debt fund InnoVen Capital in its annual Startup Outlook Report. Startups operating in logistics, digital media , e-commerce and deep-tech sectors are the most bullish about hiring. “At the beginning of the festive season in August and September last year, demand came back and the pervasive changes in consumer behaviour also played to the strengths of digital-first consumer-focused business models,” Ashish Sharma, chief executive officer of InnoVen Capital, said in the report. The Covid-19 pandemic hurt most companies last year, and they had to make tough calls around realigning team sizes and salary cuts, although a few enjoyed immediate tailwinds (edtech, online gaming, etc.), the report stated. ... » Learn More about Startup jobs seen aplenty in 2021 as post-pandemic hiring gathers pace
Karaikal residents desire weekly grievance redressal session by LG
Residents of Karikal enclave are hopeful that the present Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Tamilisai Soundararajan will retain the system of redressing public grievances through video-conferencing that was introduced by her predecessor Kiran Bedi. Though an element of dissatisfaction prevails among the people over what they describe as the lack of proper follow-up action by the office of the LG, the people have no second thoughts about the sincerity of purpose with which the system was introduced. Under the system, the public were encouraged to submit their written petitions and the LG used to scrutinise them on a weekly basis every Friday. “The residents very much desire resumption of the practice that got discontinued during the lockdown. The purpose behind the exercise was indeed good. But, very many issues were not taken to the proper attention of the LG by the Secretariat officials and staff. The language barrier was a main impediment. Under the new dispensation, there is a ... » Learn More about Karaikal residents desire weekly grievance redressal session by LG

A murder, and business as usual
The case of the “smoking saw”, to use U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s phrase , is solved. The declassified version of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) report on journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder states in no uncertain terms “that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved [the] operation…to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi ”. It bases this conclusion on the evidence that the persons responsible for the crime were members of the security detail of the Crown Prince, who is popularly known as MBS, and reported to his close advisers. It argues that an operation of this nature could not have been conducted without his approval. Although the declassified version does not provide the gory details of the heinous act, it is common knowledge, thanks to revelations made by Turkish intelligence, that Khashoggi’s body was dismembered with an electric saw before its final disposal. A short-term recalibration The U.S. Congress had been demanding for over ... » Learn More about A murder, and business as usual
