Norwegian survives eight-story plunge
PHUKET, PATONG: A young Norwegian tourist who fell from his eighth-story hotel room Tuesday morning miraculously survived with only minor injuries. At about 8 am, Kathu Police were informed that a foreign tourist had fallen from his room on the eighth floor of the Phuket Palace Hotel, at the south end of Patong on the road to Karon. Fearing the worst, Kathu Police Duty Officer Nitikorn Rawang and rescue workers from the Kusolharm Foundation rushed to the scene. There they found 26-year-old Norwegian Hans Christian Dalen lying on the ground. He was barely conscious, but still very much alive. In fact, the tourist might well have passed out hours beforehand from simple intoxication, as he had been up all night drinking with some new friends he met while out on the town in Patong, the center of Phuket’s vibrant nightlife. Mr Dalen told the Gazette from his bed at Phuket International Hospital that he and a friend, also Norwegian, had that night befriended three Thai women – ... » Learn More about Norwegian survives eight-story plunge
Muslims navigate restrictions in the second Ramadan amid COVID-19 pandemic
CAIRO: For Ramadan this year, Magdy Hafez has been longing to reclaim a cherished ritual: Performing the nighttime group prayers called taraweeh at the mosque once again. Last year, the coronavirus upended the 68-year-old Egyptian’s routine of going to the mosque to perform those prayers, traditional during Islam’s holiest month. The pandemic had disrupted Islamic worship the world over, including in Egypt where mosques were closed to worshippers last Ramadan. “I have been going to the mosque for 40 years so it was definitely a very, very, difficult thing,” he said. “But our religion orders us to protect one another.” Still, “It’s a whole other feeling, and the spirituality in Ramadan is like nothing else.” Egypt has since allowed most mosques to reopen for Friday communal prayers and for this Ramadan it will let them hold taraweeh, also with precautions, including shortening its duration. Ramadan, which begins this week, comes as much of the world has been hit by an ... » Learn More about Muslims navigate restrictions in the second Ramadan amid COVID-19 pandemic

A man of many talents: Prince Philip’s passion as a painter
It is no surprise that the late Prince Philip, who passed away just two months short of his 100th birthday, was the subject of numerous portraits by artists and photographers of the past decades. In fact, his retirement from public engagements in 2017 was marked with a portrait painted by Austrian artist Ralph Heimans. But did you know that he was a painter too? One of his most well-known paintings is an informal portrait of the queen enjoying her breakfast while reading the newspaper in the dining room at Windsor Castle. Painted in 1965, this artwork was featured in The Royal Portrait: Image And Impact book published in 2010. The couple has celebrated more than 73 years of marriage - the longest of any British monarch. Another painting by Prince Philip, of his friend English artist Edward Seago (1910-1974), was shown together with Seago’s portrait of the prince working with oil paints, at the Portrait Of The Artist exhibition at Buckingham Palace in 2016. Continuously mitigating credit risk and fraud in operational processes and systems has become a prevailing problem for the financial sector. As businesses deal with the aftermath of the lockdown, lenders may expect a surge in working capital loan requests from entrepreneurs hoping to recover from these trying times. Covering more than the Financial Sector, The Republic Act (RA) 11521 is the law relating to Anti-Money laundering and also includes real estate developers and brokers as well as offshore gaming operators and their service providers. The push for recovery and the demand for business loans means all covered sectors have to improve credit compliance as well as strengthen Anti-Money Laundering (AML) practices to ensure that members and employees comply with the law against fraudulent acts. Framedia Inc., a family-owned and well-respected Filipino company, pioneered the first full-service AML certification in the country. QC expands Covid-19 testing
QUEZON City has partnered with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and private diagnostics clinic Hi-Precision to further increase the city’s capacity to test residents for Covid-19. “Our partnerships will allow us to pool all available resources, weave our efforts and immediately address the needs of our most affected communities,” Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte said. The PRC pledged to allocate 8,000 RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) test kits to the city worth around P3,400 each. Belmonte said this would allow the city government to test more residents and subsequently reinforce its contact tracing efforts. “With the current direct partnership, results are expected to be released at a faster turnaround time,” she added.
