Are Modi’s speech-writers getting Tamil Nadu wrong?
For Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dig up the perceived past of the DMK rival, now under a new leader in M K Stalin, may not gel with the voters, both old and new. If they are still going to vote for the AIADMK-BJP combine, it will be for entirely different reasons, and despite Modi’s poll speeches, says N Sathiya Moorthy. UK ambassador makes wrong argument
British Ambassador to China Caroline Wilson's op-ed on Tuesday accusing Chinese media's calling foreign journalists in China "China haters" is making both false and wrong arguments. In a Chinese language article published on WeChat, the most popular social media platform in China, Wilson lamented that foreign media's positive role in China has been vilified. She cited multiple examples to show how news media in the United Kingdom and a few in China played a watchdog role in uncovering scandals and problems. But no one has argued against the legitimate watchdog role of the press, despite the fact that China has much to improve in this regard, and could and should learn from best practices globally. Wilson didn't name the specific article when she alleged China Daily called foreign media "China haters". I have used that term, too, but only of some journalists, pundits and politicians who have shown a consistent pattern of demonizing China by presenting one-sided stories or telling ... » Learn More about UK ambassador makes wrong argument

Crimes against Indian women: Does nobody CARE?
Next Priyanka Days after a young girl was abducted and raped outside Sahara Mall on Gurgaon's MG Road, Rediff.com's Priyanka finds that little or nothing has changed along the darkly-lit stretch. A few minutes past ten and MG Road in Gurgaon is unusually desolate. It is odd because this road in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi harbors some of the most prominent malls and shopping complexes of Gurgaon. First among these is the infamous Sahara Mall from where where last week a young working woman was dragged into a car around 2 am and was gangraped by seven men. Six of them were arrested the next day. The entire stretch of about 800 meters has no streetlights -- the only lights are those of the many hoardings that line the road and of course the shops from glittering malls. There are fewer cars parked on the road. There is also a posh wine shop on the road, which seems to be the centre of all activity at the time of the day.
