Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels on Sunday claimed missile and drone strikes that targeted neighbouring Saudi Arabia overnight and threatened more attacks, as fighting in the grinding civil war escalates. Huthi fighters have intensified operations against the kingdom as air strikes by the Saudi-led military coalition pound rebel positions in the north of Yemen, in a bid to stop their offensive to seize the government’s last northern stronghold of Marib. OECD Sees Internet as Crucial for Economic Progress
June 18, 2008 09:51 World experts discussed ways to use the Internet as a driving force for the recovery of the global economy at the OECD Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy which opened in Seoul on Tuesday. In a welcoming address, President Lee Myung-bak stressed that the Internet should be a place for trust. "The spread of false and incorrect information through spam e-mails abusing anonymity is threatening people's rational thinking and trust," he said. "The most urgent policy challenge for the Internet industry is to secure trust in transactions that are essential for the Internet economy to continue growing." The president warned that the power of the Internet can be a poison rather than a cure unless confidence is secured. Astronomers Discover New Earth-Like Planet
June 14, 2005 16:50 U.S. astronomers say they have discovered what might be the most Earth-like, rocky planet ever detected outside our solar system. But it appears to be too hot to be habitable. Since 1995, planet hunters have found 155 celestial bodies in orbit around other stars in our Milky Way Galaxy. They have been getting much better at finding ever-smaller ones as telescope technology and search methods have improved. The first to be found were gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn. Last year, smaller, Neptune size planets first appeared to astronomers. Now, the most productive of all the searchers, Geoffrey Marcy of the University of California at Berkeley and Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, report finding their 107th planet and the most similar yet in mass and possibly rocky composition to Earth. "This is truly an extraordinary announcement," Mr. Marcy says. Geoff Marcy speaks at a Washington news briefing.
