New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was all praises for Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming that he was proud of him and respected that the BJP leader did not hide his 'true self'. Speaking at a public event in Jammu, the former Chief Minister said, "I like a lot of things about many leaders. I am from the village and feel proud... Even our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) hails from the village and used to sell tea. We are political rivals but I appreciate that he does not hide his true self." He drew parallels between himself and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that like him PM Modi had not forgotten his roots and proudly calls himself a "chaiwala". Earlier, Azad retired from the Rajya Sabha and an emotional PM Modi had bid adieu to him by recalling his long association with the senior leader. ‘I believe only facts matter’: Sonia Faleiro
Goa-born, London-based author and journalist Sonia Faleiro is out with her second book of reportage, The Good Girls: An Ordinary Killing, which was released last month in India. Combining reportage with the narrative skills of a fiction writer, The Good Girls documents the 2014 gang rape and murder of two minors in Katra Sadatganj — an “eyeblink of a village” in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district — where land is power, security and identity. And where a girl’s life is “everyone’s business”. In Katra Sadatganj and its neighbouring hamlets, honour killings are common — girls are killed for marrying outside their caste, religion, even for having engaged in premarital sex. The rape and murder of 16-year-old Padma Shakya and 14-year-old Lalli Shakya (not their real names) — cousins as alike as “two grains of rice” — shocked the country at a time when the Nirbhaya case was still fresh in public memory. In an email interview, Faleiro, who is also the co-founder of the global journalists’ ... » Learn More about ‘I believe only facts matter’: Sonia Faleiro

Organic coffee farming is transforming the lives of tribal communities in Odisha’s Koraput district
Not too long ago, Surya Chhautia was ready to give up on a 100-acre coffee plantation in Golur village in Odisha’s Koraput district. The plantation had been lying unattended, yielding little. But today, Chhautia, 39, from the Valmiki community, is leading a campaign to add another 100 acres to the plantation and to turn his fellow villagers into coffee growers. Koraput, situated in the Eastern Ghats at a height of 3,000 feet above sea level, is known as much for its picturesque hills and streams as it is for its organic coffee. Koraput’s cool climes make it ideal for coffee growing. Chhautia’s enthusiasm reflects a new interest in coffee growing in Koraput where the crop was introduced some 90 years ago. For the past two years, the project administrator of Koraput’s Integrated Tribal Development Agency, Karu Soren, has been receiving a steady stream of requests from tribal and Dalit communities to help convert wasteland and common land into coffee plantations. “The trend shows a ... » Learn More about Organic coffee farming is transforming the lives of tribal communities in Odisha’s Koraput district
To beat the heat, ‘tent city’ in Singhu shifts to vacant land
A ‘tent city’ that had come up at a petrol pump near the Singhu border protest site in December last year, is being shifted to a vacant ground a few metres away to offer some respite from the soaring heat in the city. Around 50 tents were pitched on the ground by Wednesday. Trenches have also been dug up along the perimeter to avoid waterlogging during heavy rain. Around 150 insulated tents were pitched at the petrol pump when the mercury had dipped and the city received record rainfall. However, with the temperatures now soaring, volunteers at the tent city said that it had become inconvenient for protesters to continue living inside the tents under direct sunlight. Consumption of packaged consumer goods set to double in India: Nestle India chairman
Consumption of packaged consumer goods is set to double in India with the bottom-of-pyramid segment shrinking, younger people coming into the workforce, the divide between rural and urban consumers diminishing and a meteoric rise of the digital workforce, Nestle India chairman Suresh Narayanan said on Friday. Narayanan, who leads India’s largest packaged foods company, said 140 million households are expected to be added to the aspiring and affluent set of consumers by 2030, which is "clear indication" of the growth potential of packaged consumer-facing brands. He said growth in rural and semi-urban India continues to outpace that of urban markets, and the resilience is likely to sustain. Urban markets faced the brunt of the pandemic, severely impacted with widespread disruption of supply chains, curtailed manufacturing and reverse migration of the labour force. “We are starting to see signs of improvement in urban India which was severely impacted because of lockdowns and ... » Learn More about Consumption of packaged consumer goods set to double in India: Nestle India chairman

It offsets declining "trickle-down" effect of economic growth, highly summarizes the distinctive characteristics of China's precise poverty alleviation from "flood irrigation" to "precise drip irrigation." The "trickle-down theory" holds that as long as the total economic volume is large, wealth will naturally benefit the bottom by "trickling down," and the poor will get rid of poverty.
