Our city, Bengaluru, is in the news again. This time round, it is for a happy reason. Bengaluru gets ranked No.1 on the Ease of Living Index survey 2020, released by the Govt. of India . The city jumps from Rank no. 58 to Rank no. 1! An impressive jump, one must admit. Those of us who live in this city, with possibly, the largest number of simultaneously dug-up kilometres of roads today, are quite baffled and are asking why and how. Bengaluru today is mostly a “work-in-progress” city. And work is on, simultaneous and slow (if not very slow). Literally no road worth its name is left un-dug. As one waits for the Smart City project to complete, it looks like we have to bear with an Idiot city first. To that extent, I do say that the generations that will follow us in this city will need to be grateful to this generation of yours and mine that has gone through it all, trudging our way through a city just being re-built for the future. right . To be a bigger and better ... » Learn More about Which city would you like to die in?

The city where cars are not welcome
Eckart Würzner, a mayor on a mission to make his city emission-free, is not terribly impressed by promises from General Motors, Ford and other big automakers to swear off fossil fuels. Not that Würzner, the mayor of Heidelberg , is against electric cars . The postcard-perfect city, in southern Germany, gives residents who buy a battery-powered vehicle a bonus of up to 1,000 euros, or $1,200. They get another 1,000 euros if they install a charging station. But electric cars are low on the list of tools that Würzner is using to try to cut Heidelberg’s impact on the climate, an effort that has given the city, home to Germany’s oldest university and an 800-year-old castle ruin, a reputation as a pioneer in environmentally conscious urban planning. Würzner’s goal is to reduce dependence on cars, no matter where they get their juice. Heidelberg is buying a fleet of hydrogen-powered buses, building a network of bicycle “superhighways” to the suburbs and designing neighborhoods ... » Learn More about The city where cars are not welcome

Businesses say the Bay Area is a sure bet
Chinese cultural and tourism companies are moving to gain a strong foothold in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, betting that the 11-city cluster will drive a new round of growth in the sectors with its preferential policies and massive market scale. Online travel agency Ctrip said it is working with some Bay Area city governments on developing tourism products and enhancing the quality of local tourism. For example, it is studying with Zhuhai's Hengqin New Area the possibility of launching a "City Pass", a kind of prepaid ticket booklet with which tourists can visit sites in Zhuhai and the neighboring city of Macao. Ctrip is also cooperating with Guangzhou's Nansha district on an offline tourist consultation center. The online travel services provider said it will be responsible for operation, marketing and staff training of the facility, which is expected to come into service this year. Good gambit
A dedicated group of chess enthusiasts are trying to popularize the game in Hong Kong. Neil Li reports on the city's small but steadily growing community of chess players. Every Sunday, intense battles take place in a nondescript grey office building in Causeway Bay. White moves bishop to b4. Black counters with queen to d4. White's Bishop is in a bind now. It will be taken if it stays put, but it can't move to a5 or c5 because of Black's pawn on b6. Moving backward to c3 won't work either as Black's queen is on d4. It can move forward to e7 and into the opponent's territory or the bishop can be sacrificed to divert attention away from White's knight on g5. Welcome to Hong Kong Chess Club. Playing chess socially Cheaulyn Ng set up Hong Kong Chess Club around three years ago. She had felt that Hong Kong lacked a place for social chess, unlike in Australia where she grew up and where there was basically a chess club in every suburb. Kaifeng seeks top-tier status in culture, tourism
Kaifeng, Henan province, is developing its cultural and tourism industries to a high-quality level, not only focusing on inheriting tradition but also on promoting innovation, said Gao Jianjun, Kaifeng's Party secretary and a deputy to the National People's Congress. In recent years, Kaifeng heritage sites have been protected and renovated, and they're known to more, Gao said — among them include the Ancient City of Song, the archaeology museum and Yellow River cultural exhibition hall. Kaifeng continuously combines its cultural development with tourism through such things as the chrysanthemum cultural festival, Song Dynasty (960-1279) forum, cultural heritage park and a series of tourism projects related to the city's old buildings and history. In the future, Kaifeng plans to improve its cultural influence and become a top-tier international cultural and tourism city through international cooperation in the trade, tourism, art and press industries, he said.
