China's hope: US meets it halfway Editorial China Daily, China The US administration has made it clear on more than one occasion that it wants to halt China's development in its tracks and therefore it is questionable whether the US has any real interest in striking a trade deal that is not tilted entirely to its advantage. Beijing, on its part, has consistently responded to Washington by giving it a sharp rap across the knuckles. That China has responded to the US trade aggression in such a restrained manner should not be viewed as weakness. China agreed to hold trade talks with the US because it genuinely believes that dialogue is the best way for countries to resolve their differences and because, as a responsible country, it always keeps the bigger picture and longer time frame in mind. The US seems to take it for granted that tariffs are a weapon it can employ to bring China to its knees, apparently ignorant that China is not what it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s when the … [Read more...] about Washington-Beijing trade tensions not letting up

IN A ROOM at a multiuse building in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, women in maid outfits are learning English conversation from a native speaker. The Emperor has abdicated and the curtain has fallen on the Heisei era. We can stand proud that our peaceful, calm society continues as we welcome the first day of the first year of the Reiwa era. Reflecting on the Heisei era, which followed the turbulent Showa era, the hope is to head into the coming generation carefully distinguishing between what should be passed down and what should be reformed. In the past more than 30 years, Japan faced hardships such as a prolonged economic downturn, intensified international competition and a series of large-scale natural disasters. Above all, the economy faced strong headwinds, the bubble economy burst and Japanese companies, which had dominated the world, lost their momentum. At one point, the yen’s sudden appreciation led to the hollowing out of industry. The inferiority of technological innovative power cannot be denied. Gross domestic product (GDP) was surpassed by China’s, while per capita GDP dropped in the global ranking. … [Read more...] about With new era, let’s continue efforts for peace, stability
TOKYO (THE YOMIURI SHIMBUN/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Japan and the United States must strive for the stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region, while maintaining a firm relationship. It is greatly significant that the leaders of the two countries affirmed the importance of close cooperation. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met US President Donald Trump for summit talks, and they agreed to accelerate new bilateral trade negotiations. The United States has strained relations with China and Europe mainly due to prolonged trade friction. If a rift also occurs in the Japan-US relationship, the global economy's uncertainty about the future could increase further. The fact that the two leaders did not bring to the surface conflicts over trade issues, among other matters, can be said to be appropriate. Abe stressed at the talks that Japan and the United States should proceed with negotiations that would be win-win for them both. His remarks show his willingness to establish rules that will … [Read more...] about Japan, US should strengthen framework of free trade: Yomiuri Shimbun
