SSS Mobile App hits 60M transactions in 2020
The Social Security System (SSS) recorded nearly 60 million transactions in the SSS Mobile App from January to December 2020, four times more than the almost 12 million transactions recorded in the same period in 2019. SSS President and CEO Aurora Ignacio said apart from the continuous development of the SSS Mobile App, one of the key drivers of its usage increase is the need for non-contact service channels in light of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. “Even before Covid-19, we recognize the importance of digitally transforming our services for the convenience of our stakeholders. When the pandemic struck, we were already equipped with online service channels such as the SSS Mobile App that helped our members, pensioners, covered employers, and the public to reach us in the safety of their homes or offices,” Ignacio said. The SSS Mobile App, launched in April 2018, is a free app for smartphone users. It can be downloaded through the App Store, Play Store, and ... » Learn More about SSS Mobile App hits 60M transactions in 2020
Senining airs side on game-fixing issue
The ARQ Builders Lapu-Lapu City Heroes were merely returning the favor to the Siquijor Mystics. According to Rendell Senining, this is the reason why the Heroes played haplessly against the Mystics last Wednesday in the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup at the Alcantara Civic Center in Alcantara, Cebu. As a consequence, the Lapu-Lapu team looked like it connived with Siquijor in a game-fixing scheme, drawing the ire of many basketball fans on social media. Senining, who was seen shooting his first free throw with his left hand and then uses his right for his second charity attempt, said Iloilo played that way out of frustration and confusion over what the Siquijor team was doing in the game. The 5-foot-10-point guard said the Heroes intentionally missed their free throws and their other shots so the game would be stopped, and not because they were trying to shave points. “When we noticed that they (the Mystics) were disgracing the game with what they were serving us, we thought to ... » Learn More about Senining airs side on game-fixing issue
Thin and light but also powerful
Xiaomi's Mi 11 is one of the lightest and most compact smartphones to offer top specifications like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, dynamic 120Hz screen and dual speakers tuned by Harman Kardon, together with a bunch of effects for video recording to make your videos more fun. After using "large" phones for many years, it is nice to hold a "light" phone again. The phone's design, apart from the camera, reminds me of my old Samsung S7 Edge with a curved glass sandwich with metal rims all around the sides. However, the ones on the left and right are narrower than the top and bottom. There is nothing wrong with this design, apart from the downside of having a significantly curved screen, which I find causes mistypes and accidental touches during horizontal use, like gaming. The good thing though is that you can easily adjust how much you want the phone to ignore touches on the edges of the screen to fit your liking. Another downside of being light and thin is that there is less ... » Learn More about Thin and light but also powerful

Image: Instagram/@lizasoberano Celebrities, fans and rights advocates have been showing their support for Kapamilya star Liza Soberano after she formally filed a case against the internet provider employee who posted a rape threat against the actress on social media. The outpouring of support came just a few hours after the actress went to the Office of the City Prosecutor of Quezon City to file the complaint earlier today, Sept. 24. Actress Alessandra de Rossi, for one, took to Twitter to thank Soberano for standing up and to warn netizens to refrain from posting such distasteful and violent remarks. “Matuto lang galangin ang isa’t isa online. Lesson na ito para sa lahat,” she said. “Salamat, Liza. ‘Kaso’ is not good and magastos pa.” (I hope everyone learns to respect each other online. This is a lesson for everybody. Carole Baskin of ‘Tiger King’ fame sued for defamation
Carole Baskin (R) with her current husband Howard Baskin. Image: Netflix ORLANDO, Fla. — Carole Baskin, who became a pop culture sensation due to Netflix’s docuseries “Tiger King”, is being sued for defamation by a former assistant. As part of the lawsuit, the daughters of Baskin’s former husband are seeking more information about what happened to their father, who disappeared mysteriously more than two decades ago. The amended complaint to an earlier lawsuit was filed Tuesday in state court in Tampa by Don Lewis’ three daughters, Donna Pettis, Lynda Sanchez, and Gale Rathbone, as well as his former assistant, Anne McQueen. It also names Baskin’s current husband and her tiger rescue sanctuary as defendants. The lawsuit said that Baskin defamed McQueen by posting a video diary entry on YouTube earlier this month in which she says McQueen played a role in Lewis’ disappearance. Those statements and embezzlement allegations also were made on Baskin’s website, “bigcatrescue.org,” the ... » Learn More about Carole Baskin of ‘Tiger King’ fame sued for defamation
Deprived of night clubs, electronic music lovers seek solace on streaming
INQUIRER.net stock photo The pandemic has not been kind to electronic music. With nightclubs forced to close their doors to comply with health restrictions, fans and artists have turned to music streaming platforms to keep the beat going. Will 2021 be remembered as the era of the kitchen rave? While it was obvious long before COVID-19 that the dance music industry relies heavily on live events, the pandemic has forced industry professionals to confront this dependence. The latest edition of the annual IMS Business Report has noted that electronic clubs and festivals have probably lost 75% of their income in 2020, which roughly amounts to $3.3 billion. DJs and artists have not been spared as their earnings have slumped to $0.4 billion as a result of the pandemic, a drop of 61% when compared to 2019. In spite of these alarming figures, Spotify has noticed that the dance music genre is booming. Since the start of 2021, users of the Swedish giant’s global streaming platform have ... » Learn More about Deprived of night clubs, electronic music lovers seek solace on streaming
Train fares decision can wait: TCC
The Thailand Consumers' Council (TCC) has launched a campaign to halt the cabinet's plan to rethink the extension of concessions and cheap fares on the BTS skytrain Green Line. Saree Aongsomwang, secretary-general of the newly established consumer protection body, said reviewing the 30-year extension was not an urgent issue and the cabinet should first ask the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to provide details about its proposal. The move follows reports the cabinet would review the lengthy concessionary status of the new electric train service and its capped fare hikes. The suggestion the cabinet was having second thoughts about the BTS Green Line concession and fares emerged last November after the government turned down the BMA's request to renew the BTS Group's favoured status. The BMA wanted to offer the current operator a 30-year extension on its concession, currently due to expire in 2029, to operate the core section of the Green Line between Mor Chit-On Nut and ... » Learn More about Train fares decision can wait: TCC
